id Software CEO: piracy pushed us multiplatform

From joystiq.com:
Quote

At an early session Friday, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead gave a lecture on the problems of piracy on the internet. During his speech, Hollenshead revealed that, although they are still primarily a PC developer, id Software had begun to look at console game releases as a way to financially combat piracy.

"Piracy has pushed id as being multiplatform," Hollenshead said, noting that the current project Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is being scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Hollenshead's rationale is that console piracy is, by a large factor, minimal relative to the rampant PC piracy.

Let me start by saying I love ID software! I've been a gamer long time and I cant even imagine how much money I've spend on games and game related "equipment" smile.gif Piracy is not the problem here, the "problem" is called competition!!!!  This is not 10 years ago where ID can make quake and every gamer out there will buy it just because its the only good game. There are hundreds of games coming out each year now  some of the dev teams are 100+ people.Make a game that I want to play and I will buy it.I'm not saying that pirating games is ok ,I'm just saying that 90% of games are not worth buying thats all.btw OBLIVION did very bad because it was pirated.

Here is a list of games I'm buying as soon as they hit the stores.
STALKER preorder
Crysis
Assassins Creed preorder
Mass Effect
Halo3 (maybe after I try the beta)
Shadowrun
Quake wars(if it comes in the near future)
Any game by Simbin

forgot Unreal 3

To be honest, id has shifted how they make their money.  They have emphasized their engines as the best selling point.  Their most recent games have only been sequels, Doom3 sucked a big one.  Quake 4 was fun, but was done by Raven.  My favorite game recently has been Return to Castle Wolfenstein.  id is a great software company & they push the envelope every time, but when you compare their engines it's on par at least with Valve's Source, but Valve's Half Life 2 storyline just blows theirs away.  Maybe companies should realize that gamers have only a finite amount of money, and buy those that are worth it, then wait until the game price drops, and that gamers are loyal to word of mouth, not just to a game maker.

ID does make geat games.  Im glad that its worh it for them to release games on the 360 to combat piracy.  Oblivion, on the pc, was probily pirated so much because it had no security because it was an offline game. It was just to easy for pirates, it dident even need a key for F**ks sake!  One thing to think about is that most pc pirates have a hard time of playing games online with out buying them, the 360 pirates have no problem after getting the game to run.  I guess that proves there is a low level of 360 pirates vs. pc pirates per capita.

Ow, man... what a BS story. The most famous (=most pirated) games of id Software have always been multiplatform. The only difference might be at the moment that they do all their ports themselves from now on instead of relying on other companies.

Platforms of Doom...
Platforms of Doom ][...
Platforms of Quake...
Platforms of Quake II...
Platforms of Quake III...

Blaming piracy is always so easy for the PR department.

but what percentage of the pirated copys were on the console versons of those games?  although the real reason for them to go multi platform is... more money, weather or not the loss is due to piracy.

I don't buy it..

PC software can be copied, installed, and run.  Nocd/nodvd's can be made, sure.  But there is always that 'authorized key' ability on PC games.  you know, the one that tracks your cd-key and when it appears on 1000 machines all of a sudden, hey - It doesn't work anymore.. I mean, how many illegal copies of BF2/2142 are there out there?  I'm betting 0.  As another, look at MS and XP..  How many times have they released the "Xp genuine validation tool".  I've downloaded it at least 8 times, prolly alot more.  Why?  Because they've discovered yet another batch of hacked/illegit keys..

Console software can be copied ALMOST as easily, but only by someone who does the research to figure out the madness.  I mean, any fool can copy pc to pc, and while we all here take game ripping for granted, the truth is Billy-bob down the street hasn't the slightest clue how to make a backup of his Dreamcast/Ps1/PS2/Xbox title.

Games where the main component is online, Battlefield series and soon to be Quake Wars, have next to zero piracy when it comes to playing the main portion of the game, they have no single player.  id does multiplatform because they make more money that way.  They think they lose money to piracy but how do you lose money when the people pirating weren't going to buy it anyway?  Yes in an ideal world you be compensated for all services rendered but when you're driving a Ferrari to work and you're complaining about money I have no sympathy for you.

most pc devs switched to cd key based gaming and it works well. yes the key can be cracked but for any online play you need a legit one. kinda like xboxes and xbox live yes my orignal xbox is modded but for any games i wanted to play online i nedded to buy it same thing works on pc. yes on the pc world even the online can be craked but good luck finding games or any players.

ID software makes great games (last one was Return to The Caste Wolfenstein: ET)

But they have alot games that dont fit me.

Problem is people dont buy games for PC that they "just" want to 99% etc.

Then they download......

And you see a pattern.

I will most likly cop a of lot heat for saying this... Piracy has become far far too easy for the average user these days. Once someone shows someone how to get something free, it becomes an adiction I think for most.
Its all good and fair to say you buy your games now, but have you always? I for one never bought a game while i was a teenager. Now I occasionally buy a game, I hardly play them but I still pay.

i dont knoe abought that. as i said befor the new systems most devs use for games sells copys. its like buying lets say a pay mmo and not playing on the servers but on some crappy server emu you lose alot of content. pc softwhere is alot worse then the gaming half. i always have the rule if the games relly good i will buy it couse i wanna see another.

but its also true some people will just steal anything they can they dont care it might kill a good game or make people not wanna make the game for said platform. but its been that way for the last 20 or so years and they still make pc games why couse they will always sell pc gaming will never die.
