And to clear something up, you have to be a hardcore nerd to read those novels, THEY ARE BASED ON A VIDEO GAME. All they are for is making money, they are not serious literature.
i have read all 3 and thought they were pretty good books. all 3 were written by well known psy-fi writers and the books did a great job at expanding the universe while teasing the fans IMHO. i have read better books in the past, but these werent horrible by any measure.
as for the "halo hype", some need to understand that at the xbox 1 launch, halo WAS a big deal. look back over the last 5 years and you can clearly see how halo has influenced a lot of changes in the FPS genre. limited weapon inventory, vehicles, recharging health, greater emphasis on story in FPS, etc.
while other games also had some of these features (vehicles, and story) halo 1 put it all in a nice little package. basically halo1 carried a lot of it's PC/MAC roots over to the console and the game benefitted from it. the story grabbed people and the MP/co-op kept them playing long afterwords.
halo 2 was a different beast. it rode on the hype gathered from halo 1 and did improve on the mechanics in a lot of ways. however the game also fell short in some other ways and i agree with the majority here that i much rather play halo1/2 over LAN then i would on LIVE because of the annoying little twits that swarm every corner of that game. I'm hoping the new features they put into halo 3 will make it a more enjoyable experience over LIVE.
basically they arent the "next coming" when it comes to games like some believe it to be, but they are very high quality titles for their genre. you guys who are complaining about the weapons, controls, etc. are obviously not into this specific type of FPS so of course it wont appeal to you. this isnt a military shooter, its a space shooter and for what it is i think there are few equal to it on consoles.
hope that answers your question
