Best Text Viewing Program
« on: August 07, 2004, 05:49:00 PM »

Just wondering what the best text viewing program there is on the xbox. I have all 3 systems (Xbox, PS2, Cube) and while playing some games on my PS2 I would like to consult a text file from gamefaqs that I have downloaded and put on my xbox. (Switch inputs on my TV and read, instead of going downstairs to my computer).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I use the built-in text editor in UnleashX. It opens txt and xml formats, so I can check my game "hints" which I keep on the HD, and also edit my XBMC xml in the dash without ftping everything. Worth it's weight in gold IMHO.

Bump, i'd like to know as well.

For those of us not running UnleashX, is there a good text viewing and editing program for xbox? I just got 'xpad-alpha2', but i didnt get the chance to even try it yet.

the text editor in unleashx is handy to have around and it works quite well, but i perfer using my computer to change setting and type because i don't have a keyboard for the xbox and typing is slow without a keyboard.

Anyone tried "XPad"?  Any thoughts on it?

Xpad's pretty good.  I've never tried the UnleashX one so I can't compare, but Xpad is pretty capable.  I don't think it can open .xml files though, but I haven't tried yet.
It's fairly basic, though good for viewing and editing files.

I'll have to give the UnleashX dashboard a whirl.

XPAD alpha 2 is a very solid program...its problem though is its exactly what the name suggests - an alpha.
Great ideas are in place, like copy and paste....but nothing's really finished. it can't open files other than those with .txt extensions - even if they're text based scripts.

If you rename the gamefaq's you save to have .txt extension then you'll find it very useful, but, to be honest I'd stick with the unleashx editor. The author of xpad obviously got bored. nothings really finished.

Thats dissapointing to hear  :( . Sounds like it has good potential. I was hoping you would be able to edit XML and INI files with it. I think people are overlooking the value it would give users. Being able to edit a minor detail in your dashboards INI file, or xbmc XML file without ftping it would be a huge asset.

Is there anyway we can use UnleashX's text editor with a different dashboard?

Just install UnleashX like any other app and run it from your preferred dashboard.  I personally like the UnleashX text editor better than Xpad.

Does Unleash's text editor have the ability to edit other files besides .txt, such as xml, or and ini file ? If not I think i'll just use XPad.

unleash is one of the better dashboards out there for reasons like its text editing...
you can edit almost any text based file.
txt, ini, xml...
the only thing i had to change to edit was an xbx file...witch is understandable.
its a great file manger and text editor /dash
definatly check it out...

I'm definately a fan of UnleashX's text editor.. It opens all files composed of text. and integrates with the filemanager seamlessly.   XPad isn't nearly as user friendly, and is much less capable..

Im going home today so i can finally try everything. Im going to give unleash a shot. I can just run it as an app right. Just copy the unleash files to my apps directory.

Yes..  you can install almost anything as an app.  Very few programs require a specific location to load.  If a program does require this, it will most certainly explain it in the docs..
