None of that matters..

what does matter is that sega was a fast sinking company(in the red for years on end) and didnt have a choice when parent company CSK pulled the plug.

MS is the exact opposite. Their strings arent pulled by anyone outside their company and their pockets are deep.

I found a site once that listed its installed base for every 6 month period but cant find it again. If you look at the #'s shipped, I believe it was around 11 million total for the DC. Not bad for a console that was yanked 2 years after it was born. I bet if you look back at the GC sales at the 2 year mark, it wasnt doing as good as the DC was. the only difference is one company always made a profit, the other did not. Ashame Sega of Japan was so hard headed in the mid to late 90s and started the down hill slide with the Saturn

I think the fact that ps2 at the time was priced very reasonably even though it was more expensive than the dreamcast. Its different now though, I don't see sony having the same luck.

"Good looking" and "better" games don't matter one iota...

It's about the games people WANT TO PLAY... if I WANT TO PLAY Grand Theft Auto... and someone tries to give me Saints Row... even if it has a laundry list of what makes it "better" and even if it's far more "good looking" people will buy the console that has GTA because that's what they want to play...

Take Japan for instance... the winner in japan has always been the console with final fantasy on it. Why? because that's the game people want to play. Enchanted Arms is an awesome JRPG Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey look equally impressive, but regardless of how great those games are, people want to play Final Fantasy and that's what they'll keep playing, and that's the console they'll keep buying.

Lets look at that in terms of developer:

If Microsoft can't convince Square-Enix to make games (particularly their Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Series) EXCLUSIVE for their console, they'll never be number 1 in Japan.

Similarly People like Gran Turismo, Forza looks better, plays better, has more features, etc etc etc but it's not Gran Turismo and because of that Gran Turismo fans will never be swooned by it.

What MS needs to do is work on NEW franchises that don't have some kind of counterpart on the Playstation... Halo is a perfect example. The PS was lacking heavily in the FPS department, so MS made a fresh FPS game and now they own the must have FPS franchise... try as Sony might they can make as many FPS games as they want that are "better" or more "good looking" then Halo but unless they actually ARE Halo they wont convert any Halo fans.

Advertising is another thing... honestly while I enjoy the Jump in ads like the Balloon fight and the Gun Fight etc. They really suck... The one PS3 ad I saw was total BS but it was a GOOD AD and any non-tech savvy person would easily be convinced that the PS3 was the best console to buy... heck if what they implied in the ad was actually true I would have been sold myself.

I think ive mentioned something like this before, MS just have to create original franchises. Games that define MS or Xbox. If you look at it, both nintendo and sony have no real new original franchises for their systems. Its all re hashes and sequels, But MS is the new kid on the block so they have to feel new and not just a PS alternative. Some games that by name alone brings "xbox" to mind (like halo,forza). GOW is a step in the right direction and to be honest, I like the fact that the games MS has on the horizon are games that might sprout original franchises (like alan wake, crackdown). Dead rising and lost planet are good system defining games but they are from a third party so it might even end up on someone else's console.
