nope, you dont have to pay for XBL SILVER wich is "free"(yes COMPLETLY FREE) and lets you get all the demos you want for FREE.
XBL GOLD is the one you have to pay, and it is only way to get the multiplayer experience of LIVE and it is well worth it the less then $5 usd a month.
