Are you kidding...
3.5Bn to secure PES I don't think would be worth it... HOWEVER 3.5Bn to secure PES, DDR, MGS, and Silent Hill would DEFINITELY be worth it.
yeah did consider that , but didn't want to get into a battle of 'x game is published by y, not developed inhouse' without much knowledge... so yeah, even more reason!
I do think you underestimate PES however (just as I do Madden), in fact Id almost go so far as to say 'mainstream' gaming appeal in Europe came with PES to an extent, not Playstation. - seriously, i don't want to start any bitching (obviously not with you twisted - in the thread in general) but *IMO (and that of many of my mates) PES was the only reason to own a PS2, and, unbelievably (after whining about supercancel/black button), all of my mates with that version have admitted its inferiority. - This alone did alot for xbox credibility (but perhaps not sales - couldn't find any info on it... or any other platform) - In the UK it is rare to find a person aged 15 or so up that won't think they can give you a whooping at PES, and who at some stage has owned it or had a mate that has.
In anycase, it makes you wonder about MS' strategy/drive to win........ like you said, it would definately be worth it.
Given MS' 'reputation' I have been surprised at all this talk of 'high developement costs' and dwindling exclusivity - surely it should have almost become a franchise (takeovers/buyouts, you know what i mean) battle by now....

*edit: PES = Pro Evo Soccer/ winning eleven
