Are Games Harder On A Big Screen?
« on: May 25, 2006, 02:39:00 PM »

OK, let me explain myself. When is was playing at college I was bringing in about 700,000 points on my first life on average, playing on a 26 inch 1080i. Over the past week, I'm back at home and gaming on the big screen 50 inch SXRD. My Geometry Wars score has dropped significantly. Last night I played for 3 straight hours. Twice I lost all my lives scoring under 40,000. At one point I died with 0 points. I failed to score over half a million. It seems that enemies are now spawning on top of me. My 360 had been giving me some trouble so I've removed the HDD several times, I noticed that doing this erased my in game high score on Robotron. By the way my Robotron skills are now a joke. I used to get between 160,000 to 220,000. I have only lost one Vs on Live because I killed my self a second to soon, trying to end the game quick. Now I get about 4,000 to 140,000. I haven't tried any disc games on it since coming home because my DVD drive is broken (just sent it out to die at the hands of MS in Texas this afternoon). I know it sounds silly but does anyone think that removing the HDD or disconnecting the power has made the games tougher? Has anyone out there noticed a decline in their skills when using a larger TV or should I go to the doctor and get testing?

I can't play for shit on my projector. I can go up to 110 inches (on this wall, lol) and I can't play anything with it. I thought I would own in H2 considering I would have sooo much room to see people running around, but it's just too much screen to take in at once. Whenever I play on my projector I cut the screne down to about 50-60 inches and it's still kinda hard to play that way too.

I normally just play on my 27 inch SDTV or use my 17 inch monitor (since it can display HD). I just use the projector for movies now.

i'd definitely go to the doctor... making sure the cia dont follow you there, they may take your pokemon powers away from you if they know you know about their secret to make your xbox360 games more difficult...  pop.gif

I too have found the games like Geo Wars to be much more difficult on a bigger TV.  Because of the larger screen, you end up seeing less depending on  your viewing distance, but it does become harder to take the movement and enemy flight paths into perspective.

I spent a month trying to survive 1 mil. on the 36 inch.  One day my wife was using that TV so I used the 27 inch and nailed not only the survive 1 mil on the first game, but my highest score ever.

Thanks, I guess we can rule out the chance that I'm having brain trouble. I simply can't believe how much I suck on a larger screen. A few weeks back I was playing a Halo 2 tourney and the jerks running it had it set up with two 60 inch SDTVs. Not only that but they were 4 feet from two walls, which means that I had to be very close to the screen. My skills sucked and my eyes were sore.

I don't know about geometry wars but I have a 50" SXRD and games are great with it. My skills are exactly the same on GRAW and Halo 2 as they are on my 27". I sit about 8-9' away from the screen though. But I do notice sometimes that its a little hard to refocus my eyes on the screen with looking from left to right but I've gotten use to it so its not a problem

Its not easier on a small screen

my best in geowars was done on a 27" SDTV

moved it over to my 17"monitor at 1280x1024 and it looked awesome but i sucked terribly

you tempted me to play again and just got 1.3mil new high on this screen

but I know it gets harder sometimes, mine was the spawn of satan for awhile

I can't really remember if it was hard going from a 27" SDTV to a 57" HDTV 3 years ago, but 5 months ago, I went from 57" HDTV to a HD Projector shot on a screen on my wall at 120"(which I also use as my computer monitor as I type this now).  At first it's a little harder because your eyes are not used to having to move so much to look at different parts of the screen.  With a normal small tv you never really have to move your eyes, which can make it easier.  Now, I'm used to it, and I find it every bit as easy as before, except it has more benefits on a big screen.

Like newer games coming out lately, like GRAW for 360 for example, when have huge draw distances in multiplayer games.  On a huge screen, if you are playing as a sniper for example, you can look on the complete opposite side of the map without having to look through your scope and see opponents peaking around corners.  On a small tv, you can't really do that.

One thing I do know is that going from a big screen back to small screen is equally as hard at first.  I sold my 57" tv to my brother in law, and after a month playing at 120", I went to his house and played a game with him back on my old tv, and it was pretty difficult.

I think it doesn't really have anything to do with what size the screen is, it more depends on what size screen you are used to.  But it is ALWAYS sweeter playing on a big screen though.

It also depends on how close you sit too.

hmmm... i think regardless of the size, its all just there. i find myself, even after having my 65 inch for over a year, going back to the lobby after a round of splinter cell versus and coming out of concentration mode realizing how big the screen is, while in game its just a focus on what im doing... which is what i think it comes down to.

also, how far away are you sitting? you dont have to turn your head to look at different areas of the screen do you?

It really comes down to field of view. The center most portion of your eye can see color, where the outer portions of view only resolves luminance (black and white). This means in games like Geometry wars you can't tell what is what based on color if you are too close to the screen.

This also involves the brain as the center most portion of you eye can do much more advanced image processing, such a reading and recognizing characters. The outer portions see shapes, but your brain tricks you into thinking you see details and color.

In addition to this, if you have learned to play a game, like geo wars, using a certain field of view, changing that will hinder this specialized method of playing. In essence you need to re-learn how to play the game using a different field of view.

I cant stand to play games on anything smaller than 50". Been playing on 50", 53" and 77" since 1999, theres no going back. If it bothers you, youre either not used to it, or youre 2 close 2 the screen/image, or both.

If I sit 2 close, I get sick. Thats the signal to move further away, 14.5' away from 77" is perfect for my eyes.
