Fight Night Round 3 Or Dead Or Alive
« on: May 23, 2006, 08:22:00 PM »

Lemme tell ya man, I am a HUGE Tekken fan. Been playing EC tournaments since T3 and I hate DOA. It's just not even the same kind of game. It's not bad, but it's not comparable to other 3d fighters in the gameplay department. The one button counter system and heaps of slightly modified canned combos kill it for me. If you like T5 and are an avid Steve player like you said, you would enjoy Fight Night. Same movements, just different control scheme. I wouldn't tell you to totally rule out checking into DOA though. They also did a good deal of work to give Zack a lot of sway>cancel mechanics like Steve from T5. Check out both games to get a good idea of what I am talking about. But if you are thinking DOA plays slightly like Tekken, you are gonna be disappointed. Very different games. Neither is better than the other, just different.

I have DOA 4 and FN3 and DOA 4 has the most replay value out of all my games. You have to really get used to everything.

IMHO you wont get the most accurate answer by this topic.  everyone has their own opinion and it may not reflect your own.

IMO though, i would say go for DoA4.  most people who claim for it to be a button masher just cant get the system down and it is by far much better then the tekken series.  if you put a button masher vs. an experienced/skilled player, the button masher would get schooled left and right.  although there are some issues of character abuse, the game is really balanced and definatly refined.  there are many strategic factors to consider while playing, the character, environments, fighter's habits.

FNR3 is a great boxing game, definatly one of the best out by far.  but it grew old for me, lack of variety.

they are both quality games with a good amount of depth.  they are also too different to compare directly.  if you want fast paced fighting action, go with DoA4.  if you want slow paced slug fest, get FNR3.

one thing that makes the DOA games appealing for me, particularly as a party game is that its very easy to pick up but difficult to master.

the controls are pretty simple and straight forward and just playing around anyone can figure out some basic combos/moves and put up a decent fight with little knowledge of the game.

Much like the 2D MK games, against low-mid level players you can get by using just the basic game mechanics that are static across all the characters.

There are a lot of intricacies there for the people who like that sort of stuff.. knowing when to use certain moves against other moves etc. A master DOA player will school EVERYONE.

DOA4 is a little more geared towards the mid-high level players then previous versions were but it's still a really fun game and still easy for new people to pick up.

4player Tag Battles are the best.. I've been playing 4 way DOA since DOA2 on the Dreamcast... it's what keeps me coming back to the game beerchug.gif

Tekken is a great series but I never really got into it because it relies too heavily on memorization of long combos and movies... and is just too complex for the amount of time I'd want to dedicate to a game like that... I find it's hard for people to pick up and play without any prior experience too...

I'm also a huge fan of Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat games pre MK4

if you play multiplayer, there is strategy to DOA4.
if you play singleplayer, it is a button masher and the computer is cheap, cheap, cheap.

I love doa4 online
never played Fight Night except for the demo.
Boxing is too slow.

Fight Night has little to no replay value and the online is pretty dul you can't choose the class you wanna fight with unless its unranked. And alot of people cheat and use there custom maxed out characters.

I'm not going to try and hijack this thread, but it seems that people are playing a type of Tekken I have never played. Where are all these long combos? Unless you are are talking about the universal noob 10 strings, there aren't any I can think of. And those are quite worthless since you can always universal low parry between the 3-5th hit. It's no different than a DOA game except in sheer system mechanics. DOA has the same long canned combos that are meant to be countered if you are playing somebody good. I won't go on and on, but people say things like this when it is in both games, more so in DOA. And with an expansive movelist for every character that both games have, you don't have to use the "long" combos. I will stop before I get into the small gameplay mechanics and get critical.  smile.gif

To the OP, get DOA man. You obviously want a fighting game and not a boxing game from your last post. DOA is more beginner friendly and you do have 4 player tag modes. I think it's gonna do more for you than Fight Night.

Wish there was a fighter as good as tekken on xbox  sad.gif   If they could get that to come to 360 I'd be in disbelief and on cloud 9 all at the same time.  Ya I know, good luck.

DOA series sucks ass IMO.  Looks good, but thats about it. (here come the flames, "Heet you just suck at it!")

just download the demo of FNR3. if its something you like get it. if you get sick of it you should be able to trade it for DOA4. if you dont like the demo then just get DOA4. i played the demo on fight night and it looks crazy good. i am just not into boxing. like other people said to each his own. its hard to know what you really like. i am sure what i like isnt what you like. Rent? find a friend? demos?
