Something I Noticed About Xbox 360 Games...
« Reply #15 on: February 16, 2006, 09:24:00 AM »

i only own 2 games. im in college but i have enough money to get a few more games if i wanted too but i didnt see anything i liked, i didnt just go out and buy another game for the hell of it. I have personally fnished both games about a month ago and have yet to buy a new game (maybe its the lack of internet connection for my 360 idk), the demo for FN3 has kept me happy. If your playing games for the points then i dont thihnk your playing the game correctly. If i see someone with an insane amount of point i think to myself...wow you have way to much time on your hands. As for xbox1 games i had two until the summer after the lunch but someone how by the time i got my 360 i had around 50 or so....

Part of the high attach rate may be simply because many of us were forced to buy bundles.  The 2 or three games that came with, I may never have bought at least one of them.  Additionally, some gains were short (king kong) so I quickly sold that and picked up COD2 (which is awesome, btw).

Xbox Live demos may make a difference.  We can now try out games that we would never ordinarily take a chance on buying.  It may increase purchase rates.  Of course, it may hurt them in the long run, when a game is crap, you can't hide behind clever marketing when I am playing a demo that sucks.

I think that's a really good point
though I think it really works to everyone's benefit, both consumers and developers

I probably wouldn't have bought Kameo or COD2 if I haddn't played the demo's first

similarly I MIGHT have bought Quake 4 and Full Auto if I never got a chance to play the demos... So there is both sides to the argument. 2 games I bought and normally wouldn't have because of the demos, and 2 games might have bought but now I wont buy (at least not until they hit the bargain bin) because of the demos.

If anything it will allow people to make more informed decisions when buying so they buy the games they actually like based on what they've played. It makes the games people actually like sell better and the games people don't like sell worse. This can only be good over a longer period of time as developers will get a more accurate depiction of gamer's tastes and spend more money making games that will actually sell.

It also benefits gamers in that now I'm spending money on games I know I'll actually like as opposed to games I'm not too sure about, I'm less hesitant to drop $60 on a game I KNOW I'll like then a game that just looked good from the screen shots and media hype.

I think the attach rate is a mixture of

1. Quality Franchises
2. Huge Bundles
3. Achievements
4. Dumb Luck

MS is definitely reaping the benefit of having so many sports games and action games on deck at launch.  Unfortunately, this large number of launch games has led to huge bundles from Gamestop and the like.  These have had the biggest impact on the attach rate.  For me, I would have bought alot of the games anyway, but I find myself buying more than I should (and renting more often) because of the achievements.  I just want to play a game I wouldn't normally have looked at simply because of the GamerScore.  Sure, it means nothing, but damned if it's not incentive enough for me to at least TRY a game out.  Finally, I think the "delays" in games scheduled for launch have actually helped MS keep an otherwise dry spell not so ... dry.  Having 1 or 2 new games every month after a launch is a good strategy; if in fact that was MS's intention.  I don't think it was, but I don't know anymore than you guys do.

Anyway, that's my take on it.  Maybe I could get a nice fat paycheck for being an "analyst" too? dry.gif

I own 6 games, and plan on picking up GRAW when it comes out.

For me, this was the first console I ever bought with my own money (others were X-Mas gifts from the rents)  After waiting 13 hours in line for my launch edition, I feel obligated to play as much and often as possible.  I am bummed out too, because the release of games is slowing, and no other titles really looked worth my time, I am not a fan of sports games, and only picked up PGR3 to have a racer in my collection for friends to play (I ended up liking it though)

I'm happy about the demos though, but I don't see them increasing my purchases.  The FN3 demo was cool, but in the end, it's not enough fun in the demo for me to want more.  Graphics are only important up to a point.

My only problem with the demos, and the reason why I didn't add it to my above list, is that they have thus far been very poor representations of the full game.  They are either incomplete builds or they don't fully showcase the game in its entirity and that bothers the hell out of me.  Don't get me wrong, I love the downloadable demos... I just wish they were final builds and not the framerate choppy crap that some demos have been.  FNR3 was an exception.  I was impressed with that.

I bought Perfect Dark zero on Launch day, hoping that someone I know woudl be lucky enough to get a console. I was right, and a guy I knew managed to get a core system and PGR3. We both agreed Perfect Dark Zero was no Halo 2 and begun playing a shit load of PGR3 (Its no PGR2, but still an amazing game).

I liked PGR3 enought to go out and buy that game as well.
A week later I scored a Premium System from future shop.
Beat both of those games, and with Multiplayer being so terrible in Perfect Dark, I went out and Rented King Kong . Finished that in an afternoon so I brought it back to the video store, and told them it didnt work in my Xbox biggrin.gif . I was told to grab another game, so I rented Kameo. I really liked kameo all the way through the game , highly reccomended.

After this I pretty much played Geo Wars and Halo 2 (or usually nothing) for about 2 months until I rented Gun this weekend. Again, a fun game, but way too short, I beat it in 6 hours!

Looking forward to Oblivion (PC Version with wired controller for mods), and GRAW

Hehe my own take is that they allowed the XBOX 1 to be so hackable got all the pirates hooked on running a crap ton of games then secure the XBOX 360, now they are so used to having assloads of games at their command they have to buy all of the games to keep that feeling!

Seriously though there are a buch of quality titles, alot of people are talking alot of smack about the releases that have come out but personally I think these are some great games and I am thoroughly enjoying them all.  I am one of those people who have bought a crap ton of games and in my opinion I am having more fun with this new XBox then any system ever.  love.gif

I keep the ole' box around for an emulator and XBMC

I currently own 4 games (DOA4, CoD2, THAW and PGR3) and would own more if I wasn't so short on cash at the moment sad.gif   That's the same number as Xbox games (DOA3, Halo, JSRF, Amped) I owned after two months.    I could (and usually would) buy more, but I'm saving up for a move at the moment.  However, I agree that the high attachment rate is probably mostly down to the fact that those who got a console early on were either dedicated enough to preorder months in advance or hang around outside stores for 18 hours and are therefore the likelier people to buy games on a regular basis, or those who bought them shortly after release on eBay who clearly have enough money to spend on additional games.

Another point that needs to be mention is that MS has only sold a very small number of consoles compare to other console releases. Gamers who have an actual console either were waiting at a Wal_Mart line for 12 Hours (myself 14hrs) or reserved it months in advanced or try other desperate means to get it. Almost every one with a console must be an above avg gamer to have fone thru hoops to get a console and fork over the cash to pay for it.

The Small number of units sold to above avg gamers results in a higher attachment rate.

Go to blockbuster with gamerush.  my college town has only one blockbuster, it is not gamerush, but it does have 360 games, so there are exceptions.  hastings rents them here too.  but blockbuster is better because u can keep them for a month with no late fees. (no wonder the games are always checked out!)

before long ALL blockbusters/ hollywood video ect will have them for rent

Why is everyone so skeptical?
Why can't the high attach rate just mean that the Xbox 360 has a solid line up of games so far?

Give the games the benefit of the doubt, it's the fair thing to do dry.gif
After all, the over all game reviews seem to back this up....

There are plenty of games for everyone.
If you've grown tired with the games then you probably spend way too much time playing video games.
I only have two games and I barely get to play them, as far as I'm concerned, I can't get enough of them.
I'll finally be picking up my 3rd game in a week or two....

miggidy is right.

The previous record holder was the Xbox, and it didnt have anything near what the 360 offered at launch, yet it still had something like a 3.4 attach rate.

4.3 for the 360 is very reasonable and makes sense when you take the above comment into account.

Not only did the 360 offer MORE games, but alot of them were/are high profile titles.

Im looking forward to see if sony can beat their pathetic ps2 attach rate with the ps3, I dont know how they couldnt. I could make a system and have a higher attach rate than what the ps2 had at launch  laugh.gif

phantom anyone?! thats sitting in the same room with Duke 4ever biggrin.gif
