Something I Noticed About Xbox 360 Games...
« on: February 15, 2006, 04:28:00 PM »

I have been noticing that me and my 360-owning friends have almost all bought every launch title.  About two months after the 360 came out, the first game that wasn't a launch title, DOA4, came out and all of my friends bought this game as well.  Now Full Auto and Fight Night Round 3 are coming out and all of my friends are buying these two titles as well.  I have noticed that a lot of Scene-members are doing this as well.  I think MS is strategically placing these titles at dates spread out so far that the majority of 360 owners are guarunteed to buy almost every game.  This sounds smart on MS's part.  Just my 2 cents though...

Oddly this does seem to be working for them. With less games and a $400 machine, most people will buy whatever new item comes out.

Thats true. The attach rate of games per console of the 360 has been the largest in any console launch ever i believe (4 games per console, that is a lot!). I know for a fact that MS has made all the money they lost on the consoles by getting royalties from the games ive bought tongue.gif

My personal opinion on the reason for the high attachment rate of games is the high price of the console. Adults can afford it, and buy a bunch of games with it, but kids cant afford the system in the first place, so they dont bring down the ratings

That is not at all true.  I'm 15 (I was 14 at launch) and I bought two systems and every launch title.  No I'm not a rich kid either.  All of my friends are my age too.

Jimmy, you are quite observant. MS always said they were going to do this but I never actually thought about it and followed the buying trends of friends. I have to agree with you.

I have 5, buying 2 more this weekend, and buying 5 between March 7th and April 3rd. Thats 12 games right there. And I know for a fact that most of you will have close 2, or more come the end of April.

In retrospect, I think I had 7 or 8 titles for xbox in the first 12 months..

Halo
DOA 3
PGR
Silent Hill
Morrowind
Rallisport
Max Payne

Never b4 have I had this many just 3 months after launch, and Im not complaining(my checking account is though).

I'd be interested in knowing the Scenes attach rate, I bet it exceeds 5 or 6 beerchug.gif

Live Arcade games dont count towards the attach rate, just saying that now so people dont get confused.

The analogy that since more adults tended to buy the console therefore buying more games at their own residual income compare to children who rely on their parent to buy them the games is a good one.

The 360 is aimed at an older gamer compare to prior consoles. Nowadays in order to have an optimal set up we need a High Speed Internet Connection with a HDTV. Gamers that have this types of set up tend to have cash in their pockets to buy a game at will. Specially these days where not that many games have been released since launch. I myself plan on buying about 6 games in March. I plan on payng three games with cash the others are going into the credit card then pay the credit card come the April statement. Now how many of you can do that (just about all of us)? All of us have ways on figuring out how to buy this games and pay the man cause we all cash a paycheck compared to younger generation that relies on Mom and Pop.

i remember when i first got my xbox1 a week after launch and didnt get a game till xmas (i rented games till then) and even then i didnt get anohter game for about 2 months after that and hardly ever bought a game. now with the 360 i already have 3 great games and getting another when GRAW comes out. the games are comming out at a good time from eachother. once you get tired of one, a new game comes out and by then you have the money to buy it (if you dont have a job or get payed little and dont have much after you pay for essitials).

one reason might be that you can't get games from Blockbuster many places.  Here in the heart of the richest part of Chicago, no Blockbuster has them.  I had to make a GameFly account, and lord knows it takes them forever to get the damned games here, 'cause they only have one distro center, in San Jose.

I only have five games. PGR3 was a system-seller for me. PDZ was a gift. Ridge Racer 6, Condemned and DOA4 are the other three I own. At a mode of $60 per game, I'm a very diligent consumer. The only game I regret buying is Condemned. I was really excited about it at first, but it became quite the tedium to play.

I think some people rationalize purchasing crap games as a means to justify keeping their 360s from collecting dust. Some people do not want to admit that they have exhausted the fun of playing with their 360s at such an early stage of its lifespan. That's not to say that some games are not fun, but those people are impatient and want to use their new toys as much as possible. It's understandable, but that impatience falls under the spoiled-little-5-year-old category: "I don't care what it is! I want it now!" Congratulations if you have the wherewithal to afford every retail game currently available. I, myself, can afford them all right now, but that doesn't mean I'm going to buy games that I think might be fun. I have to really be excited about a $60 game or no deal.

These impatient people can be detrimental to the gaming industry. If there is a scarcity of good games for a new system (as is the case), people will buy shit-crap games for it so they won't feel like they've wasted their money on this new console. That's impatience. And because so many people are buying shit-crap games, developers, in turn, equate this as being what people want. So developers continue to pump out garbage games under a misapprehension. At the end of the console's life, we'll have about 20 awesome games, 300 good to very good games, and a few thousand forgettables. Now, I'm not saying that these impatient people are the sole reason for the abundance of shit games, but they are a factor of it.

I thought I was stuck in an "as well" loophole there for a second.   laugh.gif

They had a lot of launch titles.  Its a good thing they have held some good ones back if they have.

I don't know if I completely agree with you metaldevil, I have 9 games and quite enjoy all of them

On launch day I picked up PDZ, the day after I picked up PGR3 and Condemned. The system sellers for me were DOA4, PDZ, and PGR3. I followed all the pre-release hype for those games and it's those games that sold me the console, if none of them were coming out I probably wouldn't have bought one at launch.

Since DOA4 was delayed I got Condemned because I like Adventure Horror type games and it looked like an interesting spin on it. It quickly became one of my favorite games, though PGR3 took most of my time. A few weeks later I picked up Kameo because I really enjoyed the demo and wanted something on the console that my GF could get into and play, it reminded me of all of those great N64 adventure games. Then I got DOA4 when it was finally released.

After Christmas I picked up Tony Hawk American Wasteland because I'm just a big fan of the series (I've played through and 100%ed every TH game that's ever come out). The only reason I didn't pick it up at launch was because I wanted my first few titles to really wow me graphically, THAW looks great but it's not a WOW title in terms of graphics.

After I finished Tony Hawk I traded it in the BST for Amped 3, Again I had really liked Amped 2 on the Xbox 1. I'm a fan of both the Amped and the SSX series and while I head Amped 3 is a bit more like SSX then previous titles that sounded great to me because I like both styles.

I bought Ridge Racer 6 used from the BST, Again I was a fan of the previous titles, I actually own Ridge Racers 1-5 on the PS1 and PS2 respectivly. I like the PGR series much more then Ridge Racer which is why I didn't buy it until just last week.

Finally I also bought COD2 used from the BST. The demo was on all the kiosks in the stores and I'm not the biggest FPS fan and not big on WWII games either. I didn't pick it up at launch because the kiosk demo didn't really excite me. A few weeks ago I got my OXM demo disc in the mail. I thought I'd give the demo another go since it's such a popular game and all of my friends keep nagging me to get it and play online with them. Playing the game in my own environment, on my projector with 5.1 it was INTENSE, and I started looking for a copy that night...

I own 9 games and honestly I don't have nearly enough time to play them all, the only game I've completely finished is THAW, most of the games I have I've barely put in any time with.

I think the reason the attach rate is so good is simply because there are a lot of good launch games. Sure there isn't ONE spectacular Killer App, but I'd much rather have 9 Great games then 1 Amazing game. Variety is the spice of life. I didn't buy an Xbox 1 until a few months after launch because at launch there weren't any games that really grabbed me. With the 360 I had to be selective with what I got because there were SO MANY games I wanted and I couldn't afford to get them all at once.

I enjoy a wide variety of genres I have well over 40 Xbox 1 games in my collection right now, At the peak I had closer to 70 (I sold a bunch). My Dreamcast collection stretches into the 3 digit range. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, which why my personal attach rate is MUCH MUCH higher then that of the causal gamer.

I think the reason the attach rate is so high is simply because of the number of quality titles and well known franchises availble at launch.

Amped
Call of Duty
Dead or Alive
Final Fantasy
FIFA
Madden NFL
NBA 2K
NBA Live
NHL 2K
Need for Speed
Perfect Dark
Project Gotham Racing
Quake
Ridge Racer
Tiger Woods PGA
Tony Hawk

These are all AAA franchises that will sell based on reputation alone. Give them next gen good looks and make them all avaible within the first month of launch and you have a console with the highest launch attach rate in history.

to true, and i wonder how some question if there are any quality titles for the 360  rolleyes.gif

as for it being "planned" this way, i know that MS announced prior to the 360 launch that they hope to release games atleast 2 weeks apart given that most consumers get paid atleast at that rate.  while they havent kept up with schedule how they would have liked, i think spanning out the titles gives more breathing room for individual titles to be in the spotlight and more sold games of each individual title.  already i own more 360 titles at this point then i did xbox 1 games at the same timeframe of the life cycle.
