What Does Xbla Hold For You?
« on: January 18, 2006, 02:46:00 PM »

I've been reading alot about the potential that XBLA has in store for the 360 and I'm interested in what it holds for you?  Is it the re-release of classics such as Street Fighter II that excites you?  Or is it the promise of access to homebrew games right from home?  Is it the possibility of seeing more freeform independent titles?  Or is it just something to do in the downtime between blockbuster game releases?

For me it's the promise of a creative outlet for independent programmers.  Personally, I'm exploring programming tutorials in an effort to bring some games to XBLA (and of course get paid a little bit doing it).  The idea that one of my dinky game ideas might sell for the MS point equivalent of $5-$10 keeps my mind whirling.  And the best part is that I wouldn't have to worry about distribution.  Sure, MS keeps most of the earnings and gives me table scraps (I hear they give you 10% of the earnings dry.gif), but the availability of such an outlet turns my gears.

I want to know what you guys think of XBLA and what your ideas for it's evolution are.  beerchug.gif

so far ive loved all of them, between geometry wars, hexic and a couple others they are as if not more addicting than actual games released. and thats news to me that you can possibly make your own for it, but definately exciting to see original titles

I'm assuming that MS would be open to the idea of an individual programming games.  Isn't that the idea behind Microtransactions anyway?  Who says I have to be a conglomerated corporation like EA to pound out some indi-games?  I just hope they don't laugh at me when I submit my games laugh.gif.  I can't imagine they would turn away someone making exclusive content for their precious 360 infrastructure.

I see games like Outpost Kaloki that are genuine efforts and think, "shit, I can do that!"  I just have to work on the programming... which is going slowly.  wink.gif   I really think the future of XBLA will be in the independent programmers hands.  I'll leave the pros to making the $60 games.

If you're serious about writing games for it, I found a link that might help you out, Wurm. beerchug.gif

As far as Live Arcade goes, I'd rather see new games.
I'm pretty serious about getting into programming.  Albeit, I'm coming from ZERO programming knowledge.  The only thing I've ever worked on was Fortran '77 and that's pushing 30 years old.  laugh.gif

But I'm not a moron and older people have learned from scratch too, so I'm going to give it a shot and see if I can't bring my 2 ideas to fruition.  Hopefully they'll be new enough for you to appreciate, but I'm always open to suggestions!  Thanks for the link too.

At IGN they took a survey on what people would like to see on the arcade. The OVERWHELMING winner was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original arade classic). I recently rented TMNT 2: Battle Nexus just so that I could play the unlockable classic 4 player style. It was the sht! My folks got into and everything. It was a little easy and quick because you can keep continuing. But, there was CONSTANT action. I swear the action was so sweet, with all four players fighting, the enemies were coming out of the wood work.

the funny thing is that Xbox 1 had XBLA and no one seemed to care about it.

I'd love to make a game for it...

Making skins/themes would be even easier

The real question is how do you get your stuff on there... who do you submit it to etc...

honestly I've seen MS talking about wanting indie games user created content and blah blah blah, but I've yet to see any actual indie content be it themes, games or otherwise, never mind I don't even know how or where you'd submit this content.. if you have a link feel free to shut me up  wink.gif

Probably the closest thing I've seen is the penny-arcade themes and gamer pictures available, but they're borderline corporate anyway.

I would assume that you can write Major Nelson and see if he has a point of access in the company.  I don't think there's too much indi-games known because there hasn't been enough time passed yet.  I've put my own drawings on the dashboard's background just to give it a whirl and it looks cool, but I'm a far cry from skinning/making themes.  I'll post a link if I find a referral.

I would imagine the best thing to do is to have a demo ready in hand when you approach M$ with the idea of putting it up on XBLA.

Wurm I'm with you bro, I've been thinking about starting from scratch and taking a game developement class of sorts.
