What's The Point Of Xbox Live Zones? Really?
« on: December 24, 2005, 09:36:00 AM »

I'm new to Xbox Live with the Xbox 360 and it's been great so far but what I can't figure out is what exactly the Zone is meant for...I know there are a few choices but whenever I've played online, the people I play with are from all kinds of zones.

i.e. I have mine to Recreation, but in PGR3 and PDZ online, players from Urban, Underground, Family all play in the same games.

Isn't this defeat the purpose of the whole thing? I want to play with people who are laid back and just to have fun. People in Pro are more competitive, etc.

Is it just me, or is the thing broken?

I'm sure the developers will take better advantage of it once more people are playing.  For example, expect Halo 3 to fully use it.

the whole "rep" thing needs alittle work also. It's a great idea and all, but dam, i've been playing for only 2 weeks and already i'm 5 stars! I guess people really like me.

the only game i have so far that really uses the rep feature is nba2k6. after the game, you can submit a review of your experience against the other player.

You can do that in any game by hitting the big X button to bring up the menu on the left.

The Rep thing works I think becuase it's based on NOT having negative complaints. So if you play with 100 people over 5 days and no one complains, you get 5 stars. If during that time people complain, it goes down.

You start with 3 stars at account creation so people who have less than 3 stars must be real a-holes  laugh.gif

Yea about the Rep thing. I dont think that needs any work. Why should your Rep be lower because no one wants to comment on you? Most people don't comment on players unless they are bad so if you don't give full stars for people who don't get complaints then those people would be stuck playing with bad players.  The only thing I don't know is if you complain about someone that say uses alot of cuse words can other players see that  someone has commented ont hem as using alot of cuse words? If not I think that should be done so like if someone has a bunch of complaints then you can see what others actually said and it would help other people recognize if it was just like 1 or 2 people out of a whole ton of players that have complained about you. It would be kinda like commenting on ebay sellers.

I agree.
I've only played COD2 on 360 LIVE and I am still at 3 stars since I guess no one has done any feedback on me.
I've also played Halo2 but I don't know if the Rep is also affected there.
Anyhow, I never trash-talk others on LIVE so the rep is useless to me. wink.gif

The zones work better in theory than in execution. The biggest problem with them is that anyone can change his/her zone at anytime on Live or on the web (xbox.com). Does Live categorize you by the zone you chose initially?

As far as rep (gamer review) is concerned, it serves the purpose of giving you the choice of avoiding idiots and preferring fair players. I have submitted both good and bad reviews for people. Mostly good, but I think I've sent bad reviews of about five players. It's not like they wipe me out once and it's "bad review time." I'll race the same idiot on different days (PGR3: online career), and the retard will play dirty from the start and whine when things aren't going his way. I hate to leave a bad review, but I'm glad this part of Live works (in my experience) because I hate to play with people that need to win at all costs. It takes the fun out of the game. If I leave someone a bad review, believe me: they earned it. I have five stars myself. I've been playing since day one, and I have no comments/feedback.

The big fall down with anything that invites people to leave feedback is you will always get someone who is just upset at losing at something, leaving you a some neg for the sake of crapping on your rep

Exactly why I think it should be handled more like ebay comments or something. If you could see what the person is actually complaining about and what they say then you can usually tell if its true or just BS. Plus it can be a fair warning to other gamers that see someone with a bunch of positive responses and then some jerk mad about losing gives you 1 bad one that maybe that person is someone you want to avoid. This in turn would help stop people from using comments simple because they are angry about losing. Just a thought.

i tend to agree with this. i think it's more up to the developers to use the zones rather than xbox live to do it.... and i think that's better because it gives the developers more freedom to allow you to play within your zone or not depending on what you wanna do with their game..... but maybe that's wishful thinking and it's all bs.... who knows?

I think the rep and zone will work great. You have to remeber that there is allot of people with Xbox 360s (compared to Xbox or PS2) So it porbably has to match you with anyone available otherwise there might not be enoug poeple. I have created an online game in COD2 and sat for a while before I got 6 people

The Reps, I think allot of poeple don't even bother with it, which is why most are 5 stars or the default. Start swearing and calling their moms names, i bet your rep will change, lol  biggrin.gif

you don't really have to worry about people leaving negative feedback because they lost.  i'm still pretty much at 5 stars and by checking my profile i noticed people have left me negative feedback but, i haven't had any verbal conflicts with anyone on live.  i've won a few times in pgr, but still, the few losers that left me negative feedback hasn't affected by score enough to change it.  also if people don't leave feedback it's recorded as good, so people don't have to leave good feedback for your rep to go up.  hope that makes sense.  this tactic makes the bogus negative feedbacks irrelevant.  hope that kinda makes sense.  i forgot where i heard/read that at, but i think it was at zero hour.
