Outside of biased bragging rights, I don't see the point of having Gamerscore points (GP). They don't show how well you are at a game, just what achievements have been unlocked for that gamertag. That's pretty much my understanding of it. Am I missing something?

Here are some ways you can build up your GP:

1) Buy game. Unlock achievements.
2) Rent game. Unlock achievements.
3) Borrow game from friend. Unlock achievements.
4) Let friend come over and unlock achievements that you can't.
5) Buy lame-ass strategy guide, and unlock achievements.

Why did I say biased? It doesn't show what games you own outside of Live Arcade games. With a strategy guide, you don't need much, if any, skill to breeze through a game. You can have a friend play the game in your stead. You see? Biased. All your Gamerscore tells anyone is what achievements have been unlocked for games on that particular gamertag.

You can't use them to buy anything. You can't trade them in for anything. I've just given examples that prove you don't have to own a game, be a good player, or even play the game yourself. So what's the point? Childish, biased bragging rights?

I thought there'd be something more to this, but something is clearly amiss.

Any thoughts?

Long ago I thought you could use your points to buy stuff from the marketplace. Right now it seems that you can use your score to help add to your profile. It shows what games you have played and if you are good someone may ask you for help with a particular game. It sort of helps to build the online community that MS wants you to experience.

there are obviously some points that can be unlocked easily.. but there will be some acheivements that will not be so easily unlocked and THOSE will become cherished and obvious bragging rights

It is officially for bragging rights... and if you want to use a strategy guide to "boost" your score, that's fine.  Personally, I wouldn't feel like I earned my points that way, but I loath strategy guides and cheating anyway...

If you don't think they denote how good you are... trying getting 1M points on Geo. Wars!

it's just a way to standardize the accomplishments of different games and different genres together in one system.

I really like the system, it encourages me to be a better gamer, Compare my achievements to those on my friends list.

it also is a way for people to look at my achievements and say "he's a good Racer but not a good Shooter... etc"

I've already had people message me to ask how I unlocked a particular achievement, and I played that person a few times since, it's someone I wouldn't have played otherwise.

Sure it's bragging rights too, but at least it's a more accurate depiction of someone's worth than your post count on XS  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Thanks metaldevil for the million points. I see you also gave me the 5 star rep treatment. I think I'll be satisfied with 100,000 points, as it will cost less money in renting games.

Also, the Hexic HD achievements are completely sick tough! Good luck getting 6 black pearls to create a flower formation.

Yes, that's pretty much what I mean: that they're not accurate. Ideally, it would work well within the honest among us, but there are always people looking to take the "cheating shortcut" to get their score to balloon up. I don't cheat or use guides, but I've come across some people (real people not forumites (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif))  that have "insisted" that I use some of the methods mentioned above. It never crossed my mind that you could have someone play your game for you to inflate your GP. I overheard this guy talking to his buddy about the 360, so naturally I had to jump in. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) He told me how if he's having trouble, he gets his little brother to beef up the score on his gamertag. I was awestruck. Tremendous. He wants the credit for someone else's work.

I'm not saying that there aren't legitimate achievements to be made. I'm saying that your Gamerscore isn't an accurate representation of your true skill. It's just a number that can be had honestly or dishonestly. It's pretty much useless, and it should not be something to solely gauge someone on.

I'm having a hell of a time not accidentally making a cluster out of 3-5 star pieces. I always let those stupid things get a little too close to the bottom and accidentally trigger a combo that drops two or three star pieces on top of it clearing them off the board. Then I have to go back and make up those star pieces that were cleared out. I've yet to make one black pearl! I play it in short bursts. Luckily, the game saves my progress mid-game when I exit.

I am not a number, I'm a series of numbers depicting what my gamercard says I have done....

regardless it still looks impressive if it says you've completed a certain lap in NFS12 30 seconds faster than anyone else on the planet and you got the "best of the best" acheivement.... can't cheat to get that one now can you.

I like the idea of a gamerscore.  It adds an incentive to finding secrets or completing levels in certain ways.  I don't care if it doesn't really mean anything, I like it.
