A lot of the games on the list (as would be obvious if you read the article where they explain this) are there because they happened to work once another more important title was working. That's how it works. It's not like they spent a lot of time on making sure Kabuki Warriors worked, for Pete's sake.

I also would imagine that a lot of the missing titles are missing because there are sequels and/or versions coming to Xbox 360 and the publishers and MS want you to buy the new versions.

The fact that they can make this work at all is pretty impressive, if you ask me.

And I bet you are wrong about the exploit. If the code is signed properly, it won't matter what media it is delivered on.

With the "Download and burn the CD" option, it would half explain why MS let a Live Arcade disk out that you could boot on an unmodded xbox.

LEts test to see if they break it, if they dont we can use the same idea for xbox 360 emu updates etc.....

As we focused on the top sellers, we discovered that many other games worked due to similarities in their technology. As an added benefit, games that share engines and technology have been in some cases easier to certify for backward compatibility and have made the launch lineup as a result.

there you have it read up next time.

Spanish Rare-fan-site Mundorare.com claims they received some new information about the Xbox360's backwards compatibility from sources inside MS.
In addition to Halo and Halo 2, they say the Xbox 360 will also play all other MS Game Studios games and Rare's 'Conker and Grabbed By The Ghoulies'.

Apparently "mundorare" isn't completely in the know on these things

Damn't I wanted to play Conker on 360... sad.gif

I'm not going to buy Conker: Live and Reloaded until it works on the XBox360... and I won't buy an XBox360 until probably well after Conker works on it... since I have no money anyway...

And no Splinter Cell and Mechassualt... exploits aside, these are two of the greatest XBox franchises... what the hell?

Its not like this is the only list of games that will be playable though.  They're still working on updates.

I guarantee that one of the big problems with games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is the complexity of the graphics, and the game probably makes custom calls directly to the Nvidia chip in the XBox.  Emulating these takes more work than something that uses the XBox API.

Even if this isn't exactly the case, I still believe the complexity of the game is what slows it from being on the backwards compatibility list.

Here's how PES 720p will look when compared to 480p (480p screenshot is interpolated to 720p, like LCD TV's show 'em). It's a good reference on how the models and the ball will look much sharper. The grass texture won't probably be that sharp though.

There is no surprise that the x360 will be running code that originates from a CD. We already know that the x360 doesn't trust any media device, the HDD or the network. This means there will be a signature - encryption - signature check, so that the file cannot be altered and can only be decrypted using the key that is in the hardware. If it doesn't match the signature or can't be properly decrypted (meaning it was encrypted properly in the first place with the secret key) then the code won't be executed.

Using brute force attacks on the encryption key will be useless because if it is at least as strong as the xbox key then it won't be cracked this way. It is unlikely they used a weak signature algorithm, they will likely use multiple strong signature checks on all code that is loaded just to be safe.
