Internet Browser On The Xbox
« on: May 25, 2004, 12:18:00 PM »

Okay, all I want is to be able to use an internet browser on my xbox so that I can just take the box with me when I travel so I can play my Xbox games and check e-mail (and browse porn  :D ) with one appliance instead of taking a laptop and the xbox.

Keyboard/Mouse functionality via usb would be preferred.  Any info on this please help me out.

If that's all you want then use the one that is already out.  Its called Linksboks, just google it and you'll find it's page.  I believe it supports a keyboard as well.
Moving to homebrew forum...

Although if you are thinking of using web-based email, such as Yahoo, it doesn't support that. Or Java, or CSS. I suppose you could use it for looking at porn tho' sleeping.gif

I wonder why no one has ported any Mozilla based browsers to the Xbox? The source is freely available...

Why bother when one can easily load a linux distribution that already has Mozilla installed ?

To port Mozilla to Xbox, one needs the XDK and I don't know much WIN32 functionalities are there in the XDK and/or BIOS.

You wouldn't be porting Mozilla anyway, you would be recompiling Gecko on the XDK (which should be fairly painless as the code is as portable as they could make it anyway.)

You would still need to work in a whole interface to fit with the console school of design, as the multiple window thing doesn't work well on the Xbox, though a tabbed interface would be pretty useful.  And start button to bring up a fullscreen menu for options and the like would probably be pretty cool.

But yeah, the first step would be to get a test app with a Gecko window embedded in it.

Wait a minute... what are you guys talking about?

Two nights ago i remember specifically i couldnt play halo [long story], so i decided to try linksboks (i had the app on my hdd just never used it)...

I remember specifically going to yahoo.com and signing in.... Unless i was thinking of when i was on the pc about an hour ago, but i HIGHLY doubt it.

And i know for a fact i was able to login to a forum online.... I even tried to login to x-s forums but i forgot my password. jester.gif

You could do away with the interface and just map buttons to the controller: back button to go back, start button to go forward, left stick to scroll, white button to add a bookmark, black button to see favorites, etc. You'd need an onscreen keyboard too. I'd like to see an onscreen keyboard simulated like cell phone number pads - lots of ppl are used to those right?  :P

That would be awesome, at least for entering natural language text (you could do a pretty good instant messenger like this, such that the remote control could be used to type since it has the 0-9 keys.)

Although entering the URL is going to be tedious either way.  I think any Xbox which requires frequent use of a web browser is going to need a keyboard of some sort attached.

(I've been looking for a wireless sort of keyboard small enough to fit the bill, but haven't really found anything very satisfactory yet.)

I was thinking the exact same thing! It'd be so much faster because you wouldn't have to move a cursor all over the screen and hit a button for just ONE letter.

Sam, sorry dude, but your question is just way to newbie to address here.  No offense at all, but I'm betting thats why no one is replying to it.  Its just WAY too long to go into here.
