You can already do this with XBMC.  And you can rip them with DVD2XBOX.

But subtitles does not work, as far as I know. (using XBMC to play the VOB's works!)

I would also like to see dvd2xbox or other program implement a divx ripper, ts no big deal that it takes 12-15 hours as I would rip the movie after watching it, and let the xbox work during the night and when I am at work. then in the afternoo the day after a nice new divx would be on my xbox hdd. I am not saying that this is essential, but it would be nice and easy.

what I would like the most though is to hook up a usb tv tuner and use the xbox as a DVR unit, now that would be AWESOME!

as I cant code I will just have to cross my fingers and hope that some smart dudes out there will do the work

cheers!

I dont  mind waiting 12 hours, hell, I wouldnt mind waiting twice that. I like my movies high quality though, so I just  rip the DVD's to my  HD on my PC.

unfortunatly DIVX is closed source, but it might be possible to get XVID working.

as for a HDD DVD player, I would cream my pants if that came out, 15-20 minutes to decrypt the DVD and rip it to the HD and bam, you got a b00tyfull movie the way it was meant to be watched.

Ok.. just to test my suggestion.. of DVD2XBOX and XBOX MEDIA CENTER.

I just loaded dvd2xbox v0.5.5.  Put in Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season Three - DISC ONE, which is over 7 gigabytes.  I pushed a to start the DVD copy process of DVD2XBOX, then picked the location to dump the DVD to (in my case F:\MOVIES, will be different for you, depending on the dump directories that you set up in DVD2XBOX), then I pressed START on my controller to start the DVD copy process.  It took about 45 Minutes to copy/decrypt the entire DVD to my xbox hard drive (yep all more then 7 gigabytes of it).  then I rebooted my xbox and loaded Xbox Media Center 2004-03-09,  browsed to the directory that I had just dumped to and started playing on of the VOB files.  The video looked perfect and played excellently.  Just sharing the information, try it for yourself... and post your results here, or if you need help setting up Xbox Media Center 2004-03-09 or DVD2XBOX... let me know....  I don't know where someone is coming up with 12 hours for something.. but anyway.. like I said, it only took 45 minutes to dump/decrypt a 7 GIG movie to my harddrive. That's as fast or faster then my pentium 4 2.4 gigahertz serial ata system.

Everyone knows you can play Vobs with XBMP/XBMC - these guys want the extra features and menus (ie a HD copy of the entire DVD up and running - I believe PowerDVD handles this nicely on the PC).

45 minutes to dump and decrypt is not record speed by any means.  The limit will be the DVD drive as it is the weak link and slows down the ATA chain.  Unfortunately this is the same on the PC as the Xbox since the optical drives are always slower than the HDDs.  Regardless your PC should be just as fast - if it's not you have a problem since I have a 1.4Ghz celeron and an antique DVD rom that can rip that in 45 minutes.

FYI - the 12 hour figure came from someone talking about conversion to DIVX not just ripping VOBs (that is the obvious first part of DivX conversion though - see my sig for a link).  DivX is a full re-encoding with one or more passes - it is highly processor and system instensive making the Xbox a poor platform.  In addition it is not exactly a plain vanilla process so the person who wanted this and the Xbox to become a decent PVR stands a better chance of shooting fireballs from his ass than for his dreams to be realized (of course if he did any searching on the tons of threads on DivX conversion or Xbox PVR he'd find all of this).

Isn't Apex a standalone DVD player?  Maybe I'm missing something but the Xbox is also a standalone DVD player and can be modded to be region free, dongle free, and progressive scan.  You can also trip the Vobs to the harddrive and play them.  You do know this right? uhh.gif

fuck ur dumb.

Go reread your post or learn English so you can explain yourself.  Given the way you worded it and the fact that you just now added DVDX2 it's logical to conclude that you didn't have a clue this could be done before.  How do you think "i would love a dvd player for the xbox cuz then i coudl sell my apex" reads?  It reads like you have no idea that you can buy a DVD kit or if unable to get $20 together simply download a hacked DVD player.  So you can either be a moron or a semi-functional illiterate - the choice is yours - but don't try to cover your own ignorance by attacking people that try to help you.  Now piss off and go back to the 2nd grade.

I understand that the topic was created in good faith and most of this conversation is being maintained as such, but if I see one more person talking about how they download DVDs here, I'm shitcanning the thread.

I think this would be good, but it shouldn't top any devs list of things to do.  It is certainly not essential.  The only reason I would use it would be to backup my Family Guy season 1 2 and 3 dvds.  (7 dvds total) but that would be major hdd space (50 GB)  I have plenty of space... with a 300gb drive so I could afford to backup the best show in the world, which btw I legally purchased.  I'm still trying to figure out a good way to rip them to a nice xvid.  I've been using a program called DvdX and the xvid codec, but I never get good a/v sync.  If anyone has a good method to do this, pm me please!!!

I have not read this topic and assume this has been said before but...

We got a DVD player called XBOX Media Center, what we need is a way to convert a DVD to an AVI or MPEG file directly from the DVD drive....

...without loosing sound volume, something that will bypass copy protection.
