Been wanting this for a while.   I figure it wouldn't be too hard, but then again I'm not a coder.

For example a new version of DVDX2 which looks to a HDD Folder if no disc is present, and lists titles from folders.   As mentioned by bluemeany.  <

If you ripped it to the hdd with dvd2xbox or something then couldn't you play it with the xbox media player?  <

It probably wont run on the xbox for a very long time..if ever.

Yes, and no. You can play the vob files, but you can't "play" the dvd like on a dvd player, with the menus, subtitles, etc...  sad.gif

I thought this was supposed to be a future part of XBMC? I have been waiting on that for some time now... If not, it certainly should be!  beerchug.gif

What a waste of space it would be to have full copied dvd vobs on your xbox hard drive! Wouldn't you be better off compressing the vobs to divx and use the extra space for games??

Just my point of view.   <

I agree. The best way to watch dvds on xbox is divx format, not vob format. Having menus off a ripped dvd is not so easy as just ripping the dvd then selecting a vob file.  <

I have to agree it'd be useful, if it's even possible. What about playing maybe, a ripped ISO file? It just seems that it would be nice, if you watch more than the main file of a DVD, or use the subtitles/voice options.   <

There are a couple reasons why having an app to play dvd's of the HD is a good idea;

Proper DVD navigation, through menus etc. Makes the viewing experience a bit nicer than creating a playlist in xbmp.

Subtitle support. I just ripped a dvd with subtitles to the HD and now when viewing with xbmp i don't see the subtitles.

If a dvd to divx converter could support subtitles then i'm all for it. Either way, i think an app supporting the  watching of dvds ripped to the HD is a VERY good idea.

Do you even realize how LONG that would take to convert one movie to DIVX format on what's essentially a 733Mhz computer with 64Megs of RAM?

If you have a home network, do what I do: Rip a DVD to your "server" and stream with XBMP.  I know it's not the most ideal, but still better than loading your HD space with movies.  <

Yeh between 10-15 hrs... wink.gif  I used to do it and it aint worth it !!!! When my pc was that slow  laugh.gif

Just spend a little money and buy a dvd burner...I can't think of a bigger waste of hdd space than putting dvd movies on it....Divx yeh ok, or svcd (you can have subtitles with svcd)  and I think even with divx from memory...???
Now how often will you watch this movie from the hdd 1,2 or 3 times in how many weeks ???
The only thing which it may come in handy for is when you go on a trip and you want to watch movies in the car with no skipping etc...
But then I personally would have them in divx.....

Waste of space ... well.

MOD EDIT: We don't want to hear about your life as a pirate kiddie.

What a waste of perfectly good DVD's to burn all those films!

Pretty please make a player, I would be forever grateful!

(uhh.. and .. right now I have a computer running gentoo linux, using xine dvd to play the dvd's, but my wife understands nothing of it .. not exactly user friendly..!)

Would i rather have 20 mpeg4s or 2-3 mpeg2s on my Xbox HDD?  The answer to this is quite obvious wouldn't you say?  Thanks to XBMP/C we now have xboxes that act as standalone mpeg4 players and so much more.

Voted 1, useless and a waste of dev time on projects that could be by far more interesting.

Again I have to disagree. I get alot of DVDR's and the only way to watch them with full functionallity is with Windoze or Linux. Thats stupid cuz both DVDx and XBMC/XBMP are so close to doing it already. And the burning is stupid cuz I don't want to archive all the films I watch. Just the gooood ones... :)  <

Ok I'll explain my point of view some more then.

DVDRs you download are stripped down to fit a DVD5.  Most have a single audio track, no extras and downsampled video. IMO, thats not a DVD anymore so you're better off buying them...  And if you still like to download 4.5 gigs just to have menus that have basically no use but chapter navigation, then burn em to DVDRW.  You can't go wrong that way, cause NONE are worth archiving as you mentionned.

Secondly, do the world a favor, save some bandwith and get mpeg4 instead if you're gonna download dvdrips...  Although its still not right and you should BUY them.  I mean, we are talking about backing up movies we own on xbox HDD and beign able to play them right?  Not playing downloaded copies...

Now if I'm gonna backup my DVDs to my xbox HDD in 2004,  I'll do it with the amazing compression technologies/codecs that are available to me.  My choice is  xvid k thanks.

I stand by my vote: useless, cause why would I care about menus when what I want is to watch a movie?
