Will Apex Kill The Xbox Mod Scene?
« on: January 06, 2004, 09:48:00 AM »

I'm kinda worried that the Apex might kill the Xbox mod scene. When the Apex comes out alot of the software developers/hackers will spend thier time developing homebrew for the Apex instead of the Xbox. Right now everyone is focused on the Xbox because that is the only console that can be moded and use homebrew(Ps2 doesn't count), and apex might take away from it being it is such a more powerfull console. The word is also that the windows on it will not be locked down.

Apex is just another PC, there's no challenge in making stuff for it. Where as xbox is not designed for homebrew gaming, therefore its far more fun to develop for the good ol' box.

Don't worry, no one will leave, especailly not after all the progress thats been made.  <

That's the game machine that is supposed to run winblows, and automatically load PC games off CD without install, and auto configure them to work with joypads right?

Isn't that supposed to come out this month? I was wondering about that one, but lost all links to it, you got any?

Sounds like a crock of shit to me, but I'm VERY interested!!!

XBOX, as the gamepark and Dreamcast have proven already, will NEVER die.  <

Honestly, I'm a little unsure how it's supposed to even work as a business model, much less technically. Consoles have traditionally made money from game sales and licensing fees, not just selling units. At that price, being such an open standard... if they even make it out the door, I give it a few months before it dies.
The XBox can do pretty much everything the Apex can do, plus run Linux. I see speed being an advantage for the Apex, that's it.
I mostly just use the Xbox for emulation, and if you look out there at emulators for Windows, they really don't do a lot that you can't do with the Xbox now.  <

Oh I was not thinking. APEX is behind this. OK! They have been ripping up the market since they emerged a few years back with there super low cost MP3/VCD compatable DVD players!

Ok, no this is not going to ruin the XBOX, for one it is more costly, and for seconds I think that the XBOX will be more stable and have a more friendly user interface, not to mention the fact that is is probably just more fun to develope on the XBOX than for yet another PC.

I do not think this system is going to die either. Rather I am willing to bet that this will become the poor man's computer, as I am sure that since it will be running Winblows XP, that it will retain some sort of internet connectivity, as well as other features, and possible upgrades.

If Apex fails, they will simply stop making the hardware, but the software which is being used (DISCover software) on this hardware is also being used by other companies such as Alien Ware who plan on making there own units like this...

...Yes things are CHANGING indeed! :)

I would guess that if Alienware is going to use the software, that it must work like they claim, as they are a pretty serious company with quality (yet overpriced) products.

The one downfall I noticed of the Apex model is that it will be using VIA's CPU's which I have not heard the greatest things about as far as compatability goes, though I have heard they are pretty fast too... will see. Also I think it is going to use S3 GFX, which means Pacman will play at a good frame rate, but I'm not sure about anything beyond the Quake 3 engine. :)

More money for Microsloth either way.

Never heard of this, but im not worried if people are going to be playing pc games they will probley get a pc.this doesnt even really fall under console, most people are going to be lookin towards MS and sony rather than something that looks like a dvd player.I went to console gaming, one because i cant afford to keep upgrading pc's,but also because consoles get alot more games, yes over the years pc has alot built up but in the time that consoles are out they come out with alot of games, pc's only come out with 1 or 2 major games a year.

I play all my computer games on the TV, I'm one of those people who do not care if they are playing in 800x600 VS 1024x768 or what ever, once games hit the 128-Bit GFX mark, I was content.

I will most likely buy one of these as I am a HUGE fan of Apex products, and try to buy everone I know there DVD players for Christmas so I can share VCD's with them!

I hope that what ever joypads come with this are FULLY configurable with Mouse and Keyboard emulation in mind.

This may not take off right a way, but when PC prices drop, more of these will prolly start showing up in homes, not as a XBOX or Gamecube killer, but as a PC/DVD unit that happens to play games.   <
