such a converter would cost you several hundred bucks in books, programming devices , parts and pcb etching equipment, as well as quite a few hours to learn about programming and pcb construction.
simply put, forget it. it takes A LOT more than a few wires and resistors to make such an adapter.

Well, then the adapters for sale on ebay are either fake, or an amazing deal for under 20 bucks. anyway, i was just wondering if there was a tut somewhere on the web, or if someone had personal knowledge. i know its possible, and do plan on buying one, i just want to get my xbox hd fixed asap. dry.gif

thus, just buy the thing off ebay.
I was looking into doing this using the manufacturers reference design and the cheapest I figured I could do it was about $60 each (making 10 of them).  This makes me wonder how the hell they can make a profit at $20 or $30 each.

Does the hard drive draw power through the usb as well? You don't have to plug a molex into it??

Just seems strange to get a hard drive to get power and transfer data from 4 wires.

No, it has a separate power adapter that you plug into the wall

USB is NOT capable of driving a 3.5 inch hard drive, so you WILL need an external 12V PSU and probably a 5V one too (or just make a small step down circuit from 12V)

a 3.5" HDD can pull around 2A on spinup, and will settle about 3-400mA or so,
so you need a beefy PSU

...........as for developing your own USB-IDE converter, forget it,
bridge chips cost about £4 in 1 off quantities, then theres the PCB and cable, which could be had for free if you're hacking up some other device.

then theres the extra components, and the time and the firmware development!

you can buy USB enclosures for under £15 nowadays, hack them up :-)
