Well I dismantled the Xbox just to check the fans were OK but they're fine. I put Freestyle on a USB stick along with a Launch.ini and booted into that fine. Booting from the HD still resulted in Freestyle rebooting though.

I then flashed back the previously working non-dashlaunch Freeboot and booted from HD, which booted into NXE as I'd deleted the old Launch.xex from the HD. I then tried to load Freestyle from the Quick Launch and it just locked up whilst scanning. I loaded Dragons Age fine though but didn't want to play with the fans on auto.

I ran Freestyle from a USB stick with the HD connected, and it scanned the HD fine and worked normally.

I then deleted the Freestyle and fsdata folders from the HD and copied Freestyle from the USB and that seems to have sorted it. I've also re-flashed the dashlaunch Freeboot and the launch.xex and it's booting into Freestyle OK at the moment.

I had problems with games freezing a couple of weeks ago after changing from XBR to Freeboot and now this. Probably just a coincidence but maybe there's something about it that doesn't agree with my box!

Those temps are fine.  My xenon box's GPU regularly gets to 80C and it still works.

I'm not sure what the cause of your rebooting problem is though.

Good to know thanks. I get nervous if they get above 60c, as that's when Freestyle turns the lights to red, and I've spent a lot of time getting this box Jtag'd and probably won't be able to find another Jtag'able box now so I want to keep it as cool as possible.

I've removed the DVD drive for now as I haven't got round to flashing it yet, so couldn't use it for much anyway, which allows more air in the front and helps keep the temps lower but I'll probably cut a hole in the case above the CPU heatsink/GPU heatsink extension to let the air in that way for when I put the DVD drive back in. It might be unneccessary but maybe I'll be able to run the fans a bit slower, which would be nice as they're a bit too loud even at 80%.

i'm in the exact same position as you - crappy old xenon (rrod fix in my case) which i want to last forever! i put a cpu heat sink in place of the usual gpu sink, and fitted 2x 12V silent fans above them:

there's a tool you can use called 360 flash dump tool to mess with the target max temperatures for the cpu, gpu and ram. then your box will monitor the temps and adjust the fans as necessary without being fixed at 'loud' all the time. the default target temps are high, so if you have decent cooling you can pull them down a lot. i'm set for:

cpu - 70
gpu - 60
ram - 60

so when im running films/xbla games its quiet, when i hit up a 360 game it starts to loud up after a while as it gets hotter. i find that after time playing a 360 game it levels out and quiets down a bit

thought you might find this useful. good luck!

Hey, thanks for the tip about adjusting the target temperatures with 360 flash dump tool. Didn't know that was possible.

I've actually considered doing the same as you and removing the DVD drive, replacing the GPU sink with a bigger one and fitting 12cm fins on top. I can't quite decide if I'm ready to lose the DVD drive though, as it would come in handy for playing games from DVD if my hard drive dies. If I don't go the whole hog, I'm still going to cut a hole above the CPU/GPU extension heatsinks and stick a 12cm fan above there to help keep things cool.

At the moment it's quite warm here, so even on Freestyle dash with the fans at 90% the temps are only just below 50c but I'm sure the 12cm fan will bring that down somewhat and then I can lower the fan speed as well.

Cheers.
