I've not used Xtoolbox but I know about networks and I don't think the above is necessary. You should just have both IPs different to each other but within the same range (ie, the first 2 or 3 numbers the same), and have the subnet masks equal. For example:

Box 1
IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Box 2
IP: 10.0.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Settings like this mean the two machines are within the same local network, and so the default gateway setting doesn't matter. Default gateway is only used when a machine is trying to access an IP outside its local network.
