I have a Seagate 120GB Ultra ATA 100 7200 RPM and it's been flawless for me.  They go for around a hundred bucks at Best Buy (and I even got a 60 dollar mail in rebate, so ultimately 40 bucks).

Back up your entire harddrive, the whole C and the whole E.  (FTP to a special folder on your PC harddrive)

Swap the harddrives and set the jumper to Master on new drive(look in the harddrives instructions for how to do this, it's simple).

Have the latest Slayers Evox Auto Installer (1.3?) from the usual places, put it on a CD if you have a Samsung DVD Rom, or a readable CD-RW if it's older and this is necessary.

Rebuild F drive (an option in slayers evox auto installer) and then FTP all your crap back over.

That's not detailed, I know.  But that's what I did in a nutshell.  Check this out too, it's old so it tells you to modify the slayer ini file before writing the bootable media which is unneccesary if you have the latest version:

Xbox Harddrive Upgrade Tutorial

It shouldn't take more than a half hour even if you're a little confused.  It's incredibly easy.

PM me if you have questions.  There's kind of a lot to it considering you need readable media, an up to date bios, an up tp date slayers evox and all the general knowledge.  If you're just moderately, and I mean MILDLY, moderately, familiar with the modding scene, it's still incredibly easy given you know how to read tutorials and not do anything stupid.    ;)

Good luck.

Assuming that you dont have a modchip, the first thing you'll need to do is pick one of those up, read the tutorials on installing it... After that download any apps, emu's, roms you want from the "usual places" along with a bios such as xecuters 4983 bios which supports drives larger than 137GB, then look up the hard drive locking list and choose a drive that locks and buy it (Maxtors are recommended as they are the most lockable). After all thats out the way, install your modchip, flash your bios, FTP the contents of your C and E drives off your stock hdd and stor them on your PC, install your drive, make an evox boot disc and format your new drive, FTP your C and E drives back to your newly installed drive along with an Evox dash and youre all set. For a more indepth description you can read through the tutorials.
