Wrong Region After Flashing - Just Put My Mind At Ease
« on: October 08, 2008, 04:23:00 PM »

Okay, I probably know the answer to this already but I just want to set my mind at ease over the issue.

I was asked to flash a "Halo 3" edition 360, Philps/Benq drive. Pretty straight forward, had it done in 30 mins with iprep. I wasn't able to test the box as the guy didn't bring the power brick with him and I have 2 Falcon boxes so the bricks are the wrong type for the Halo box. Anyway, I told him to check the box when he got home, and loaned him my backup of FIFA 09 to try it with. He rang me about an hour later to say that when he ran FIFA it came up as being the wrong region. On questioning him further he admitted he had bought the box second hand and had only played a handful of games on it, Gears Of War, Halo 3 and Hour Of Victory.

Now I'm pretty sure that EA region lock their games and at least Halo 3 was region free, so I'm thinking whoever owned the box originally has imported it, realised it won't play European games and has traded it in and this guy has bought it, realised it won't play European games and reckoned getting it flashed would change the region.

I've explained to him that, even though it is set as a UK machine in the OS, the region is hard coded into the system.

So, am I right in thinking that there is no way the region of a 360 can be changed by flashing the drive?

No, console will be region locked.... Firmware modification wont alter that.

Tiger Woods 2009 (PAL) is the only Region Free EA Game Ive heard of.

not doable anyways since the halo models already have the fixed CB version which prevents downgrading and the exploit.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have the console here after it was left off to me a couple of days ago. I stuck it on Live to check if it needed any dash updates or whatever and it was fully up to date. I tried it with originals and backups and all Region Free titles played no problem. ANy region locked titles, such as EA stuff, all returned a "wrong region" error.

Any ideas how I can check what region it is?

he could buy another hdmi model console and swap the guts and sell the Unknown Region console with the regular case then he would still have his halo3 edition console but the right region.

He could. But that would mean also having to buy another dvd drive to flash as well. Plus it would be just plain wrong.

Best bet is just stick to region free games, no big deal, you can check the region of the game easily with xdvdmulleter.

I wish I had seen this post a few days ago, I am looking for an imported box (NTSC-U) to replace my now broken 2nd box. Settled with an old core system which should be with me today in the hopes I can change it maybe, or just go without early US releases.

I may be interested in having this box, straight swap box only, nowt else, if it's confirmed NTSC-U... PM me if you want.
