No. Downgrading will work (if you have a downgradable board) but you can't actually run the exploit afterwards without an already modded DVD drive.

For this case you will have to wait until someone finds a way to launch the exploit from the HDD (may be possible, but not done yet).

No new 360s are downgradable; repaired ones also seem to not be downgradable. It's not dependent on the motherboard version - there are non-downgradable boards of every version. It's solely down to which second-stage bootloader is in the CB partition in flash - CB 1920 is not downgradable, the older version is.

No you need a modified copy of KK to run the exploit, but I think you can hotswap a retail version for a modded version.

Google or search on youtube xbox 360 hotswap

You can't hotswap 360 discs to play burnt copies on an unmodded drive. The videos of this being done for Gears are fake. Don't think there's any way (currently) to do what you want. Wait for a HDD-based exploit (which may be never, but who knows).

Anyway, just to clarify: CB 1921 is the first non-downgradable one, not 1920 as I said above. Unfortunately nothing displays the CB version in your xbox - the only way to find out is to solder on the infectus, dump the NAND and see what the tools say the version is. If it's CB 1921 you just wasted time/effort/money and voided your warranty for no reason wink.gif Generally any recently bought or repaired console will be on 1921 already.

So does the CB version get upgraded when the dash is upgraded to the latest?  Is it primarily the older boards with the downgradable CB, or just luck of the draw?

No, at the moment CB does not get updated when you run a dash update, but it's not impossible for them to do this in future. All new systems have CB 1921 already, and all systems sent off for repair and returned with a new motherboard will do. I'm not sure if they update CB on repaired boxes that didn't have their motherboards replaced.

CB 1921 came out a while ago, so you are unlikely to get a new 360 at retail which has 1920 or older. A second-hand system is probably downgradeable, though, unless it's been repaired in the last few months.

I have a couple '06 vintage 360's...so it sounds like they're likely downgradable.  Thanks for the feedback!
