Couple Questions

OK, so I have been interested about running linux on my 360.

First off I am pretty decent at soldering...or so I would like to think.

First thing. I have something like 5990 kernel, so I have to downgrade, this is possible I am pretty sure, but I have to buy an InFeCtUs modchip correct? If so, which one? The argon one or something else?

OK so I downgrade the kernel, I think it downgrades to 1888 right? But I can't go on Xbox live then right? I can't go on XBL unless I have the latest kernel correct? Do I have to dual boot kernels or w/e from a XD card or something like that? How does that work out?

And as for King Kong and modified DVD drive and such I can work out myself, but basically I want to know.

How do I go about downgrading my kernel and what does that entail? Can I go on XBL with an old kernel?

Can I use my 360 for linux sometimes, and sometimes for playing games on XBL w/o getting banned and without having to open up the box and solder and shit inbetween when I want to switch?

basically, if it has HDMI then it is a V2 or V3 motherboard and cannot be used with linux. the V2 and V3 versions have a newer base kernel than the exploitable kernel. the xbox cannot go below the base kernel.

Excellent, neither of my 2 consoles have HDMI.

Out of curiosity, what is the base kernel for the HDMI consoles?

for this to make sence, i have to correct one of my earlier posts. i stated that HDMI xbox will not work with linux, where i meant to say they will not work with the timing attack.

the base kernel in HDMI xbox's is 1921 where the V1 xbox has a base kernel of 1888. the 1921 base kernel has the memcmp exploit patched so the hash cannot be 'guessed' to allow the timing attack to happen, and there for it cannot be downgraded.

the only way to run linux on a hdmi xbox is if the console already has the linux exploitable kernel or something lower, but that is pretty rare if not impossible. IRC, hdmi xboxs where first shipped AFTER the linux exploit was found and had already been patched, so i would assume that all HDMI xbox's have a newer kernel than the exploitable one.

having hdmi would have no benifit anyway, it would still require drivers for HDMI to work, which there are none. the only benefit would be the 65nm CPU which really isnt worth it

your DVD drive will work fine with it.

currently, there are still no sound drivers, and it still only runs on one CPU core (someone correct me if im wrong on that) altough i think its possible to plug in some usb speakers and have sound.

i have a V2 xbox, so sadly i cant access linux, but soon i will be buying a dedicated xbox360 just for linux. my xebian install on my original xbox is a bit too slow for me
