then again i never moded for the backup thing sence i never damage my disk its all homebrew for me. and those that use the small children excuse is a pretty bad one sence i have small kids play my systems all the time. its  very simple to work around you simply handel the disk for them untill you teach them how to handel them thereselfs.

Well, Mr. Child-rearing expert, could you kindly explain to me how to do this? Telling my 3-year old "no" doesn't always work, and neither do spankings. My originals are kept on a spindle where he can't get to, and backups are convienently located in the originals' case.

My guess is if spankings aren't working, maybe try harder! tongue.gif But seriously, you spank your kids if they mess around with your DVDs? huh.gif Maybe a tad harsh...

This is great news!  I'm starting to think homebrew is closer then what I had originally thought it would take.

as for the mods be it threw the firmware or chiped it seems live isnt gonna happon so where gonna be back to xbox 1 days anyways. sence firmware mods are now bannable and running a old kernel whont allow live without a update.

While it might be true, once the console is hacked, it is only a matter of time for real modchips to come out, probably which allow you to switch kernels so you can play on XBL when you want, and do homebrew all the rest.  At least that is my guess, I'm no hacker.

Yes! And all that you need to do in order to retrieve your dvd key is to have a working matched dvd rom so that you can run King Kong and subsequently the linux boot disc  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Oh crap, forgot the fact you need to have a working drive (thus a working DVDkey) in order to get it...

I have two console with 5759 kernel mad.gif who can wait with 4552?Really I curios.

my guess is, people like me with a 360 for playing and a 360 for modding.

as soon as the hypervisor exploit became available i left my firmware hacked 360 alone.

I don't think so actually. I might be wrong but I'd guess the DVD key is not actually in the console at all, only in the drive. It's probably used only for checksumming or decrypting some other stuff in the box, not literally compared. I don't see why MS would need to store the dvd key in the 360 itself... So if you lost the key, you're probably out of luck.

It's a good progress but it's not useful yet.It will be useful when the console is totally hacked to run homebrew, xbmc etc.. so that we can downgrade our kernel version to do that.
Another thing is cpu key is not the same as dvdkey since they would mention that we could use dvd key to get it working.Cpu key is something different.

There is a problem with your theory, if the key is stored on the DVD drive, and the Xbox 360 just checks that a valid key is there.  Then there is no reason why just swapping in a different Xbox 360's DVD drive wouldn't work.

Most likely the DVD key is stored somewhere on the motherboard, and it checks with the DVD drive to verify the keys match.

Good news, but a bit too overhyped.
Having a downgrade to run linux and the exploit is fine, but if someone won't find a way to do something more serious (like putting in a modded firmware) it's useless.

You've missed the point. This is significant because 99% of users do not have expolitable kernels and have blown the efuse. Granted they do not have the CPU key... but IF they find a way to extract the CPU key on newer kernels THEN we can downgrade systems with blown efuses. Basically, this hack is very similar to DVD firmware flashing in that it will become a step in the process when a full hack is available. You can't run Linux without modified firmware, and in the future I suspect that you won't be able to run homebrew/linux without a CPU key extraction to bypass the efuses(if blown).

One thing i just realised that i've been wondering for a while...how do u downgrade?

Is it a disc with an older kernel version on it that u trick into working? Is there an option in the dash to revert to a previous kernel (wouldnt make sense, cos that'd blow an efuse, and ms dont want that available to newbs), or my guess is u have to get into one of the chips and convince it to revert to an old one.

Some1 clear this up for me please!

You need an infectus chip to read and write the EEPROM.  You just rewrite an older kernel after encrypting with your per box key.

maybe i'm just naive, but why is there such a focus on this hypervisor exploit of a previous kernel?  i mean yes, this is progress, but wouldn't it be more plausible to try and focus more on finding some kind of hole regardless of kernel versions? so that the majority of the scene would be able to use such a hack with xbox live like we did with the original xbox?  I mean don't get me wrong, this is all cool and everything, but I just don't see much of the scene being able to do this, or finding a use for it for that matter

this is just my opinion, i'd like to see what others have to say however

Wow some of you guys aren't seeing the big picture.  Picture ALL 360's having the ability for homebrew (which means more access for development/exploits/tools/).  All 360 hard drives wide open.  So much development that it exponentially grows into the mushroom that was xbox in 2002-2004, and ongoing to this day (albeit most emphasis on 360 right now).

Were any of you guys around when there was a new release of a dash or app 3 times a day?  A new app, dash, or emus was seen almost every week it seemed like.  Remember 120 GB hard drives were big?  Then the breakthrough by ozpaulb?

This is the kind of stuff so many of us see unraveling all over again in front of our eyes and its been building since we saw that hooded guy in that crappy youtube video of the hack convention.

I haven't been plugged in for months and its not because I dont like live  smile.gif

This is just another door.  Maybe second to the last?
