Kernel Exploit - Possibilities And Hoe To Remove R6t3?
« on: May 27, 2007, 06:43:00 AM »

Hey chaps!

I have a 360 with a hitachi 47 drive that has been modded with c4eva's 2.4 and is running the latest live update. A friend has offered to swap me his unmodded machine that has never been connected to xbox live or run any games from january onwards so it should have an older kernel on board.

If I accept the swap, what sort of possibilities open up? Are things like homebrew (particularly xbmc 360, emulators etc) on the horizon or larger hard drives with the ability to store games looking likely or is there some other reason why the older kernel is particularly desireable?

If so, can anyone point me to some instructions on how to remove the r6t3 resistor to ensure that if the kernel is updated that it can be restored to an earlier version so I can check whether this is within my capabilities?

Many thanks for your help and time,

If you do get the correct Kernel, something which you can check in his System Setting via System Info of which you need two possible kernels you can get some expolits such as Linux running via the King Kong Expolit.

Now I'm sorry to admit I can't tell you how to do this but don't e expecting the world just yet, the expolit seems to be in it's infancy, so no XBMC quiet yet.

As for a Larger Hard Drive, I think the largest you can get is 120Gb and that's by extracting information of a Signed HD from MS on sticking it on a Western Digital.

Sorry I couldn't help you out more just thought I'd point out that at the moment there doesn't seem to be the killer apps available. I think we'll have to wait until the Smarter People out there find a way of running a different kernels first.

It's nothing to trade your xbox 360 for... It was a great contribution for the scene + wonderful research done though. Though if you're waiting for some xbmc style stuff... that's a long way away, at least for a wide scale, because only people with kernel 4548 or under can do the exploit. So lots of the scene has already gotten 4552 or 5759, including all 4 of the 360's in my house.

It's a worth while investment to get an older kernel 360... as an extra though, not to replace one already.

thanks for the replies but what I was wondering was if it was possible to remove the r6t3 resistor (which would prevent efuses from blowing) and be able to keep the ability to downgrade the kernel in the future even if it was upgraded via live or recent game. If this was possible I could use the console now and have the ability to revert it if there was a break through on the homebrew scene.

Does this make sense? Am I getting the gist right? Even is this was the case I would still need to find out what's involved in removing said resistor to see whether it's within my less than electronic-engineer skill set. Can anyone confirm whether removing r6t3 and preventing any e-fuses from being blown would allow downgrade from 4552 onwards and are there any (detailed) instructions showing how to remove this fuse?

Once I have this information I should then be able to decide whether the swap is worthwhile and within my skill set to remove r6t3.

Thanks as always! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Yes, it has been comfirmed, if you remove R6T3, you can downgrade after having been upgrade via live to 4552, or 5759. Here's a link to a high-res picture of R6T3, and showing you how small it is, just desolder it and remove it, you should save it too. Also, there's no point to doing it if you don't have a dump of your NAND from a previous kernel. So before you update it, if you really are wanting to do this, get an infectus... and install it, then dump the Kernel with there software. R6T3 is easy to remove, haven't done that one myself, but, removal of these is very simple. Be careful.
