Great progress made by those at xboxhacker!

Maintaining kernels and patches on the flash memory and then creating the new exe on bootup is definitly not something I would have thought to have done but I am sure MS had their reasons. Excellent find!

Continue the great work!

Interesting that the kernel and dashbaoard are separate...

I'm curious if he can still log in to Xbox Live, does it check the kernel or just the dashboard version.

Also I'm curious if this hack undoes the Save game restrictions that came about during the fall update.

Either way it's some interesting progress indeed.

My balls are tingling reading this.  If the kernel boot sequence can be altered to downgrade it, can it be altered to boot unsigned commands?  Is the kernel signed?  I think this is some nice progress, I have a feeling this could lead somewhere good.....

Yes the kernel is sign i think i read that on free60 or something like that but downgrading it is not the same than replacing all the kernel since the 1888 is already on the flash and it's stored as a backed up kernel

Progress is always welcomed. This might stimulate even more hackers to jump on board.

Heheh, ironic that we finally have some small progress on the day my xbox 360 auction closes.. rolleyes.gif

Hopefully we'll see some  more progress in the future...hopefully the said progress will also work with the Zephyr, because that's the next 360 I'll get, if I get another one at all.

It is always fun when people find out new "secret" stuff about the 360. Not sure if this discovery will help us anything, but it is anyhow an interesting read and perhaps its the beginning of something bigger smile.gif

exactly what i thougt
im sure someone on here has one
so downgrading the kernel isnt really downgrading its just tell the 360 to boot one thats been backed up or what

MS can't feasibly resign the kernal everytime they patch it, can they?  That would be pretty big risk, considering the data could be pulled during the update process... so speculation about a "hacked" update to the kernal may be founded....

Yes, it is feasable, and it is done. Yet if you re-read the original post, you would find that the original kernel is signed, and all the patches are signed. They are signed and encrypted before being sent to your xbox360 over xbl, so it is not a security risk. What I don't know is if this means the final patched kernel is signed or not... By way of the transitive property it is, but is there a final signature for the patched kernel (possibly located in the patch, or is that even possible)?
