Not sure what you mean by doesn't cut it, a USB HD should be enough to boot the xbox and hold your backups, all you need is to install and flash is the latest DashLaunch and point the Launch.ini to boot from your USB drive...

If your box is Jtaged you can use any hard drive as long as is formatted on FAT32

I don't think you can hook up anything other than a DVD drive to the SATA header.

I don't notice any speed difference with the games loading from USB hard drive.
Connect hard drive>turn on xbox>goto system settings>format hard drive or connect it to your pc and format it FAT32
