Just ordered the 640gb from Amazon, same price as newegg, free shipping as well, but no tax if you're in California/Tennessee/New Jersey.

Seagate makes horrible hard drives. I would never buy a $200 HDD from them. It's basically Western Digital or nothing. The price difference is pretty big too - you can get a 640GB WD for $90 from newegg, then you end up paying $110 for the extra 360GB if you get the one off eBay. My guess - the HDD failed, and that's why there are no pics.

What are you talking about? Besides from Seagate's brief firmware fiasco, the major brands have about the same fail rate.

Agreed.  I have tons of WD/Seagate/Fujitsu.. I don't notice one brand failing more than another.

@tstein
As for 12.5mm fitting the 360 hdd shell.  I actually was gonna do that.  I bought a WD 1TB 2.5" my passport essentials SE.  I *thought* it would contain a 2.5" 1TB drive inside.  It did.  However, it didn't have any sata connectors!! doh!  It had some custom usb connector soldered on so I couldn' t use it with my 360.  I had to use it with my wii, so no loss.  Sticking with a 640GB 2.5" for the 360 for now.

But anyway I tested putting it in the shell and it looks like it'll fit just perfectly.  You have to bend the 4 tabs that were used to screw in the hdd.  After that it should be a snug fit.  You wouldn't be able to use screws to secure it in the metal retainer but it shouldn't move since it's really snug.

FYI if anyone picks up a WD 750GB or 1TB 2.5 inch it is likely the WD7500KPVT or WD10TPVT, both of which are the newer "advanced format" models of the WD7500KEVT and WD10TEVT.  This means the drive has to be aligned during or after formatting or it will run around 200-300% slower than it should (or a reg sata drive would).

AFAIK, no one has tested one of these in the 360 yet to see how well it does perform.  I have one sitting on my desk, however I'm taking it back as I don't want to risk having a drive that doesn't work (or works at a speed so slow it is unusable).

There should be a jumper on the drive to let it work in the old sector format thus not needing alignment.

Jumper only exists on the 3.5 inch models, not the 2.5's...only option to align (if it isn't aligned by default by the OS) is to use wdalign, which doesn't work on the 360's formatting...

Didn't know this thanks.

On windows you can use Diskpar to set the offset before formatting, would this work if you created the 360 drive on the PC as opposed to letting the 360 format it?

Possibly, but I doubt it as the 360 drive reads as unformatted/uninitialized on both my PC and my Macbook Pro.  However, I just got my hands on a 1.5TB (3.5 inch) I could test with, and it seems the 360 gets the same speeds off the advanced format drive as it does the OEM drive, so I went ahead and installed the 1TB 2.5 inch I bought into my 360 last night.

In terms of making it physically fit...it didn't off the bat.  I had to use a dremel to cut off the tabs that screw into the HDD and also the tabs that run the length of the drive from screw hole to screw hole, as well as get rid of the metal piece that sits over the HDD to give it a bit more EM shielding.  Since the screws could no longer be used, I just used some electrical tape to secure the drive, however even without tape it didn't move much unless you forced it.
