The JTAG console I have is only that. There was no HD included with the system when I purchased it. I bought a "broken 360 HD" off ebay and swapped the 20GB with a new 640GB.
I have another console with a 120GB drive but it has the latest updates (bad stuff) etc...
What I've done so far is:
With the 640 drive in the enclosure I formatted it with the system tools format option inside the 360 leaving me with only partition 1.
Following the original tutorial in this post I connected my 120GB drive to my PC (running win xp as my win 7 desktop wouldn't work with Xplorer360_extreme2).
Using Xplorer360_extreme2 I am in the process of backing up the 120 drive.
Where this 120GB drive is from an updated console I'm worried that if I restore the image to the new 640GB drive to have all 3 partitions do I run a risk of something bad breaking the JTAG? If so what files should I delete from the drive before connecting it to my xbox?
The kid I bought it from told me that the resistor has not been unsoldered yet and that an inadvertent update could mess up my JTAG.
What I was hoping to do is to have both my 640GB upgraded 360 drive and my 2TB external USB drive all set before I bring it back to him to remove the resistor.
The method you wrote of below leaves me with a few questions:
1. Put original HDD in your console and load up XeXMenu.
- there was no original just my 120gb with all latest updates etc...
2. Ftp Hdd1 and HddX to your PC.
- Forgive the noobishness here but what exactly do you mean by Hdd1 and HddX?
- Also how would I FTP them to my PC with no software loaded onto either HDD using only the dash I have already set up on my JTAG console?
3. Replace original HDD with larger HDD, format drive in XBR, and run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 (from the usual places)
- format drive in XBR does this mean just as I already have with the 640GB drive?
- if so can I just use hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 to do what exactly?
4. Ftp contents of Hdd1 and HddX back to console on to larger HDD.
- Again not sure about how to ftp back to the box.
I am sorry for all the questions here, but I just don't want to break the JTAG with an update from my other console's HDD.
If possible I just need to get the 3 partitions on the new 640GB drive and know what files I can copy from my old HDD to my new one without risking damage to the JTAG.
Lastly as far as preparing the 2TB external USB drive what is required for that to be accessible and load games/emulators?
Thanks again and sorry for the long posts. Once I have got this all done I will be sure to write a Noob guide of how to do what I've been trying to do to pay it forward.
The first thing I would do is go into your family settings and disable xbox live access so you can use ftp without connecting to live.
run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 from Xexmenu. Put it on a usb flash drive or something and browse to the .xex in the folder and run it right from the xbox. It will add the partition 2 table.
Download Filezilla or some free ftp program.
You can run Xexmenu from a cd in the dvd drive with xexmenu on it since your hard drive will be empty and xexmenu will not be able to be run from the games library. (Burn Xexmenu to disc)
Plug your xbox into your home network. Open up Xexmenu and go to the section with the system info (temps and stuff) get your IP to connect to the xbox with the ftp program.
Open Filezilla. Type in your IP address with xbox as the username and xbox as the password. Make sure transfer mode is set to active not passive.
Since you did not have an original xbox drive you can transfer the contents of the 120 gig drive. I believe since the xbox is on system menu 8955 nothing should break it unless you possibly update with a newer system menu.
Hdd1 is the main section of the internal xbox hard drive. Hddx is the partition 2 data I believe. (not positive) You will see the Hddx section when you ftp into the xbox.
The external usb drive you have you will have to format it to fat32 with Fat32Formatter software. Google it.
Once you format it place a folder called Games on the root of the drive so the xbox will see the drive.
I think I answered most of your questions. It is very late here so I am tired. I will check back tomorrow.
