Tutorial - The Easy Lazy-boys Way To Change From Standard Hdd To Large
« Reply #30 on: March 02, 2010, 10:28:00 AM »

This about the closest thing I've found to something I can understand.

I have a jtagd 360 and want to replace my xbox's 2.5" drive with a new 640gb drive.

Elsewhere I've read that before letting your xbox format the drive it needs to be flashed in DOS using a bootable disc and iprep. Is this still true as I haven't read that here or can you upgrade using one of the procedures above without first flashing the drive?

If anyone else has successfully upgraded their drive to a 640gb drive? I'm just looking for as simple a way to do this as possible preferably without hex editting and being able to use the entire drive and not have it be limitted to say 250gb like I've read elsewhere.

Thanks for any help

If you're not bothered about Xbox1 compatibility or being able to see the hard disk on your pc just stick the new drive in the case and format it in NXE, couldn't be simpler!

I think I like the ability to have xbox one compatibility and didn't know you could but also like the idea of having drive visibility on a pc. Either way it's done does the drive require a flash be done first prior to formatting it with the xbox as other tutorials I've read online suggest? And will I have full use of a 640gb drive or is there some cutoff?

You don't need to flash the drive if you only plan on using it with a jtaged console. XBR removes security measures which flashing the drive bypasses. Follow this procedure:

1. Put original HDD in your console and load up XeXMenu.
2. Ftp Hdd1 and HddX to your PC.
3. Replace original HDD with larger HDD, format drive in XBR, and run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 (from the usual places)
4. Ftp contents of Hdd1 and HddX back to console on to larger HDD.

The JTAG console I have is only that. There was no HD included with the system when I purchased it. I bought a "broken 360 HD" off ebay and swapped the 20GB with a new 640GB.

I have another console with a 120GB drive but it has the latest updates (bad stuff) etc...

What I've done so far is:

With the 640 drive in the enclosure I formatted it with the system tools format option inside the 360 leaving me with only partition 1.

Following the original tutorial in this post I connected my 120GB drive to my PC (running win xp as my win 7 desktop wouldn't work with Xplorer360_extreme2).

Using Xplorer360_extreme2 I am in the process of backing up the 120 drive.

Where this 120GB drive is from an updated console I'm worried that if I restore the image to the new 640GB drive to have all 3 partitions do I run a risk of something bad breaking the JTAG? If so what files should I delete from the drive before connecting it to my xbox?

The kid I bought it from told me that the resistor has not been unsoldered yet and that an inadvertent update could mess up my JTAG.

What I was hoping to do is to have both my 640GB upgraded 360 drive and my 2TB external USB drive all set before I bring it back to him to remove the resistor.

The method you wrote of below leaves me with a few questions:

1. Put original HDD in your console and load up XeXMenu.
    - there was no original just my 120gb with all latest updates etc...

2. Ftp Hdd1 and HddX to your PC.
    - Forgive the noobishness here but what exactly do you mean by Hdd1 and HddX?
    - Also how would I FTP them to my PC with no software loaded onto either HDD using only the dash I have already set up on my JTAG console?

3. Replace original HDD with larger HDD, format drive in XBR, and run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 (from the usual places)
    - format drive in XBR does this mean just as I already have with the 640GB drive?
    - if so can I just use hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 to do what exactly?

4. Ftp contents of Hdd1 and HddX back to console on to larger HDD.
    - Again not sure about how to ftp back to the box.

I am sorry for all the questions here, but I just don't want to break the JTAG with an update from my other console's HDD.

If possible I just need to get the 3 partitions on the new 640GB drive and know what files I can copy from my old HDD to my new one without risking damage to the JTAG.

Lastly as far as preparing the 2TB external USB drive what is required for that to be accessible and load games/emulators?

Thanks again and sorry for the long posts. Once I have got this all done I will be sure to write a Noob guide of how to do what I've been trying to do to pay it forward.

Thank you!

This worked perfect for me.

Ftp speeds were really fast.

Everything works fine. I had to apply the avatar update again which I still had the update on my flash drive from the other day.

Thank you to the original tutorial as well for your time and effort in helping people get this working. You guys are the best!

The first thing I would do is go into your family settings and disable xbox live access so you can use ftp without connecting to live.

run hdd_compat_partition_fixer_v1 from Xexmenu. Put it on a usb flash drive or something and browse to the .xex in the folder and run it right from the xbox. It will add the partition 2 table.

Download Filezilla or some free ftp program.

You can run Xexmenu from a cd in the dvd drive with xexmenu on it since your hard drive will be empty and xexmenu will not be able to be run from the games library. (Burn Xexmenu to disc)

Plug your xbox into your home network. Open up Xexmenu and go to the section with the system info (temps and stuff) get your IP to connect to the xbox with the ftp program.

Open Filezilla. Type in your IP address with xbox as the username and xbox as the password. Make sure transfer mode is set to active not passive.

Since you did not have an original xbox drive you can transfer the contents of the 120 gig drive. I believe since the xbox is on system menu 8955 nothing should break it unless you possibly update with a newer system menu.

Hdd1 is the main section of the internal xbox hard drive. Hddx is the partition 2 data I believe. (not positive) You will see the Hddx section when you ftp into the xbox.

The external usb drive you have you will have to format it to fat32 with Fat32Formatter software. Google it.

Once you format it place a folder called Games on the root of the drive so the xbox will see the drive.

I think I answered most of your questions. It is very late here so I am tired. I will check back tomorrow.

Thank you Rulnip!

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to clarify those things for me. I will try this tomorrow as it is getting late here as well, and I'm about spent for the night.

I will report any progress I make.

Formatting the drive Fat32 is no problem. I just found it odd where that limits single files to not exceed 4GB in size if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not doubting that this is the correct format as from other reading I've done I've come across it. Are there no games that once ripped to the drive will have a single file larger than 4GB in size? I know they're not strait 7.35GB ISO files any longer once on the drive but the extracted files contained on a disc.

Thanks again, and I should have some time to try your suggestions tomorrow evening.

I have a ton of games ripped to my 1TB drive and not one of them has a problem with the 4GB limit. They are not in ISO format anymore.

I am not sure if it can be in any other file system right now but fat32. I have not read up lately if it has changed or not.

I love having a larger drive. My girlfriend can now stop bugging me for all the Lips DLC I was not able to add to the 20GB drive we had before.

I will check back tomorrow. Hope it works out for you.

NICE, so it worked (following the original method posted here). Basic steps were.

Required Components/Hardware
- Original Xbox HDD that are upgrading from (the console doesn't matter which it's from)
- New 2.5" SATA HDD (I used a WD 640GB 5400 RPM drive found on Newegg for $89.00)
- PC running Win XP 32bit (haven't tried 64, but didn't work in Win Vista 32, or Win 7 32, or Win 7 64).
- Way of connecting the xbox HDD to your computer I used an xbox 360 HDD to USB adapter that came with the 120GB OEM HDD I bought a while back.

Required Software
- Xplorer360_extreme2

Steps
- Connected Original OEM 360 drive to PC, and launched Xplorer360_extreme2.
- Click, Drive | Open | Harddrive Or Memcard
- Once it loads the drive, click Drive | Backup Image
*Make sure you have at least the amount of space available on the disc you're saving your backup image to as the size of the HDD you're backing up. Otherwise it will freeze up and you'll get a "running out of space error message".
* This backup process will take a while. I think it took close to 2 hours for me.

While backing up the original HDD I formatted my 640GB drive inside my console using xbox's format utility.

After backup was complete closed Xplorer360_extreme2.

I connected my new 640GB HDD (formatted with xbox 360) to my pc.

Launch Xplorer360_extreme2 again.

Click Drive | Open | Harddrive Or Memcard

Click Drive | Restore Image I had to change the default file type to All Files *.* to find it as it wasn't in a .bin, or other type of backup file format.

Then I closed and relaunched Xplorer360_extreme2 to verify that all 3 partitions were present.

I put the newly restored drive in my xbox 360 and formatted again to regain all of the available space on the drive.

Now I just need to work on transferring over game saves and DLC that was signed for my old xbox and figure out how to get it to work on my new one.

Thank you all for your help in this forum, and to Midnight Tboy for posting this guide.

So lets say i have a 500gb hitachi drive, i make a backup of an official M$ 60gb drive, restore the 60gb image over the 500gb then reformat in the 360 will i have the full 500gb and still be able to use the avatars and stuff. Because right now, allthe DLC stuff works but i cant use the avatars and stuff, profile avatars come up just blank people. BTW i have a jtagged jasper.

That probably won't work. This is the hard way to do it btw. Use this method.
