out of curiosity are those pins on the motherboard for the hard drive connector being used on the 12v pins? if not could we just apply the 12v from there thus not having to have a spare wire running out of the console? and if so would the 12v hurt a 2.5 sata hard drive if it was plugged in?

The 'extra' pins are grounded, you would have to dismantle the connector on both ends to make it work

laptop hdds can be connected to 12v without problems

there wouldnt be any problem with using that power setup on a 2.5" drive. it just wouldnt use it. as far as the pin header, theres not an extra pin available to put the 12v through it.

i know this has nothing to do with the mod, but what is that usb connector and the switch on top of the black console you have there??

That is an awful lot of trouble to go through. You can just buy an extension to the plug you've got and solder into the yellow wire with a 12v rail..
