Interesting idea. Why didn't I think of that? What I did was butcher the connector until I get to the soldered joints and solder my sata/power cable to them directly.

It's gonna be pretty hard to measure the voltages on the connector with a multimeter tho. If however you manage to sort out the 5v from the 12v, I'd say this approach will look very clean indeed.
