Hard Drive Connector 12v?

I've looked via Google and through a lot of this website and only come up with a few mentions of the 12v line. Using a 360sata adapter or similar they all require a 12v input in order to power the drive. However, the pinout diagram i have from "Speedy22", the pdf of all motherboard connectors, states that the connector only uses a 5v, data and GND lines, not even a 3.3v (see J1E1, pg 17 of public released file)

My question then is, does the Xbox hard drive have a 12v requirement or not? If so, which pin/pins is it?

My personal conclusion has resulted in two ideas,
A: it doesn't need it , must be for larger drives/dvd etc
B: the Microsoft drive is "special" and doesn't need it but replacement drives would

I'm trying to fit a "standard" 2.5" drive into the enclosure and then use it on a pc using the xbox pinout, but dont want to use a 360sata (would be too big for my purposes)

Cheers to anyone who can clear this up

Okay, let me clear this up..

SATA is a Standard for connecting Serial Advanced Technology Attachment devices..

That said..

3.5" Desktop drives use both 5v & 12v where as 2.5" (aka Laptop size) drives use only 5v (with the same power connector) with the exception of the WesternDigital VelociRaptor drive which requires the addition of 12V to power the fast rotational speed of 10k RPM's.

All THAT being said, 99.99% of laptops only have a connection for 5v and thus why the Western Digital Veloci-Raptor drives won't work in them.

So, if you are trying to use *any* 360 drive in an external enclosure, just plug in the normal SATA connector for power (or get a molex to SATA power adapter) and plug in the data cable and you're good to go!

If you still can't figure it out, send me your shit and I'll fix it for you. rolleyes.gif

To be clear, unless you're going to mod a Veloci-Raptor into your 360 (which would be schw££t a$$) then you don't need to worry about any 12v lines...or pins...
