New 120gb Hd... Now What?
« on: January 08, 2009, 12:54:00 AM »

I bit the bullet and purchased the OFFICIAL MS 120GB (courtesy of a a few gift cards from Xmas it only cost me $40.00).  Transferred my data from the 20GB and now have a 20GB drive that isn't going to do anything but collecting dust.  However, I also have the WD1200BEVS just sitting here that I was experimenting with.  Is it possible to pull the hddss.bin file from the OFFICIAL HD that I have now and use it on this one and then swap the HD in and out depending on the game that I want to play?  Since I now copy all my games to the HD for quicker access times.  Can I have the same GamerTag on both Hard Drives, since the hddss.bin came from the original drive?

Yes you can copy the hdss.bin from your 120gb hdd and use that.It seams a waste of time to have 2 120gb hdds as your not going to be playing over 15 different games at a time, you might as well have a game on there that delete it when your done. No you can't have a gamertag on both hdds because the first one would not know what acheivements the second one got. Unless your on live it might work im not sure. But you can purchase a memory unit for easy acess to your harddrive.

Yes I do play live which is one of the reason that I bought the bullet and purchased the Official 120GB HD.  The reason that I put the games on the HD and play them from there is for a few reasons.

1.  It saves me from having to hear the "Jet Engine" when the DVD is spinning up.  Yes I can recopy it when I want to play it, but then why not just keep the 20GB.  That would do the same.

2.  I reduce the risk of scratching the DVD in the drive since it isn't being accesses during the game.

3.  Quicker load time, which is obvious.

It just would be nice to have multiple HD with the same GamerTag.  I could use one 120GB HD for my content and the other 20GB for my kids content.

The only way you would be able to functionally use your gamertag with both hard drives is by using the memory unit for your profile.

You could use your gamertag on each drive, but you would have to recover your profile from xbox live each time you wanted to sign in with a different hard drive.

A pain in the butt.

Using your memory unit however, you would be able to keep your profile independent of the hard drive and switch out drives easily for your games and the kids.

This is exactly what I have (real Xbox 120GB (elite), real 20GB and WD 120GB). My WD 120GB has been used with hddss.bin that everyone uses. I want to use the one from my own elite 120GB. Thanks for asking this question as I came online to do so. I use a memory card to keep my profile as suggested by others.
