Xsata Recovery Help!
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:03:00 PM »

So after I got my XSATA hooked up to my new 360 ELITE i tried to store my saves without actually learning how to and I idiotically restored a 20GB Hard drive IMAGE to my 120GB HD.  Now, My 360 isn't reading my HD at all.  I just downloaded Xplorer360 extreme2 to work with my new 360 ELITE, but I am still getting a 20GB HD because I reformatted the PARTITION.

The GOOD NEWS is that i have both IMAGE files backed up for each my XBOX360 and XBOX360 ELITE

obviously, when i try to restore the HD with a 120GB IMAGE is receiver this error:
[IMAGE FILE IS LARGER THEN THE DESTINATION DRIVE]

Now I can open all my old files through opening my images and I've basically manually dropped the exact folders into the partitions necessary but the 360 still does not read my HD I assume because it is reading it as a 20GB HD.  Is there anyway to resolve this??

You might take a look here and see if it is of any help:
http://beta.ivancover.com/wiki/index.php/X...d_Drive_Upgrade

You need to know how to hexedit the drive, but something might work.

I dont know why it does not work in the 360, it might be because the drive firmare says its a 120 gig but the hddss.bin portion of the drive says its a 20 gig, you might try hex editing some of the values on that site like the start of partition 3 or just after the hex 2000 area just to see if you can get it messed up enough to make the 360 want to reformat it.

What you really need is the hddss.bin from your 120 gig before you imaged it.  I am sure it is saved in your full image backup but I have not played with that enough to know where it is.

Let me know how it goes.

Good Luck.

As Scooba156 said, we cannot suppy you with a hddss.bin.  They are all unique and considered copywrited so we will not suppy it.

I still think we can strip it of your complete backup of the 120 gig drive but I need to play with it a bit to find out exactly where it is.

To confirm, you do have a big 120 gig file of your 120 gig drive right?  I am still going to experiment with mine and see if I can find it.  I which the file was not so darn big as you could email it to me and I could see if I could find it.

The new extreme2 version of xplorer360 would let you dump your hddss.bin, which is what you should have done but alas, we are beyond that option.

Read your PM, as I have a couple of other things that might help.

I was able to get 20 gigs worth of free space on my computer so I made a complete backup and now should be able to assist you in stripping your hddss.bin out of your complete 120 gig backup.

I hope you know how to use a hex editor!  Winhex is one of the best for this as it lets you read and write straight to your HDD.  The freeware version will not let you write though.  I just found another free hexeditor called HxD that looks like it will also do the same thing, but I am not very proficent with it yet.  I would recommend Winhex if you can afford it.  It is really worth it.

If you open your complete backup file, your hddss.bin is stored at location 2000-2DFF hex.  You will need to copy that portion out and save it as a file.  From there there are several ways you can go, but I would try using xplorer360 extreme first to restore hddss.bin file you just created to your 120 gig.  After that, I would put it back on your 360 and see if you can format it.  Hopefully that will work and then you can work at manually moving your data from your 20 gig to your 120 gig.

Check your PM for my email and we can discuss any further problems there first and then post our findings here to hopefuly be able to help others that might do what you did.

Good Luck.

well my backup image of the ELITE is 111GB.

i have 2 backups for a regular 360 at 18.6 and 17.7 GBs each.

i could email it? or upload it to a file sharing site but wouldn't the file have to be split up to be sent?

Just found out some good news while playing around.

You should be able to strip your hddss.bin straight out of your backup.  Run xplorer360 extreme 2, select drive, open image, point to your 111gb image of your 120 gig drive and it should hopfully show you all three partitions.   Then click on edit, and dump hdds.bin (sic) and save your 120 gig file.

Then plug your 120 gig drive on, select drive, open, harddrive and once again you should see all three partitions.  In thory, you should be able to go to edit and restore hdds.bin and you would be ready to reformat the drive with the 360 and I would guess you would be done...  But it looks like TheSpecialist didn't finish the restore portion of his mod or something as on both my 20 gig and 120 gig, that option is still greyed out.

Oh well, at least we should have your 120 gig hddss.bin backed up and we just need to hexedit it back onto your drive.  So I guess you will still have to work with a hex editor to do that.

If you cannot figure it out, email me (check your PM) and maybe you can call me on the phone and I can walk you through it.

I guess TheSpecialist is not reading on here anymore or he would probably have told you all about this already.

Good Luck.

thanks for all the info, i was playing around with it with the hex editor and my restore option was greyed out as well, but luckily this morning i went back to best buy and since it was only a week old they allowed me to exchange the whole 360.  my question now is: do i open my old 360(GB) image (without the new 360 connected obviously) and dump the files so i can load my GamerTag and accomplishments or will opening an IMAGE not work for the game saves?  I've been lookin around these forums to find actual directions on how to do it (since i didn't get any with my XSATA) but i must be looking in the wrong sections and I haven't found anything other then the directions on youtube which are impossible to see with how bad the quality is.
