Running Games Off Of Hard Drive
« on: April 06, 2008, 01:37:00 PM »

I just thought of like yesterday night. I know the answer is no, but I want someone who knows what they are talking about to tell me know.

Downloading a demo to your hard drive, isn't it just a xex file?
Couldn't you just rip a game and put it on your hdd?
I know it shouldn't be that easy, but is it in the realm of possiblity that this could work maybe with some modding/hacking?

In the header of the signed .xex file, are some bits that specify the allowable run-from location.  System updates allow pressed disc, burned disc, hdd...etc. Retail games allow pressed disc only.  You cannot change the xex header without breaking the signature of the file.
If you could resign your own files,  or boot with a custom firmware that ignores this check, it would be possible to run from hdd,.
Good luck to you on both.

To Bxrican ~
If you're tired of them getting scratched up, take better care of them. I know when I play a different game, I locate the case for the one in the drive, which is in the vicinity of my 360, and place it in it. then i take the different game from it's case and place it in the xbox. Viola! Disc not scratched.

And don't gimme the "but i have to share them with my little brother/sister" crap. If your smart enough to find these forums and create an account to post from, your smart enough to keep your shit in good condition.
