And by doing this you would prevent the games being used for XLINK also, be much better if you could just patch the xbes to throw out the ports or even the server used on live, that way you could still use tunneling to play your games but live wouldnt be able to be accessed as the port/server info would be wrong.
Read my post again. I'm only going to try to patch the Xbox Live libraries. System Link probably uses other libraries.

I tried this today on Unreal Championships.
Works like a charm!
Choosing Play Live and your profile and you immediately get an error message saying that there's no network connection. I've identified the same piece of code in 5 games now (which was expected as they all use MS's libraries). Since there's only one function that does the login into Live, I'm pretty sure it works on Live Aware games too.
Now, how to incorporate this into a BIOS (as a Xbtool patch maybe?), that's a bit more complicated. I'm thinking along the lines of a run-time patcher that reads the patches from a file on the disk (think Live disabling, trainers, etc). I could probably write the code myself, but I'd need to dwelve into the inner workings of the Xbox BIOS first and that's a task that needs time. I wonder how much usable (empty) space a 256 kB bios has?

btw, how is this any different then what the x2 bios already does. it finds the hex string that represents "check if game is loaded from dvd drive", and does something with that. in other words, this should be fairly easy to implement

I will just throw this topic of mine into this discussion. You do realize that you can prevent Live Aware games from connecting to Live by just adjusting some settings?

No needed BIOS modification at all.

Yes, this is a known fact, but it's not a WELL known fact. Point of this whole thing is to prevent accidents - ALL accidents. To save modders money and nerves.
Anyway, with the XBE patching there's no way you can screw up your Live connection. Although, there's a couple of points that need to be considered:
1) MS's Live game libraries can (and probably will) change. Whether the small fragment of code that the patch works with will change is not known.
2) XBEs are protected against manipulation by the digital signature. However, since mod BIOS defeats this check, it may be possible that XBEs in the future will also contain some checksum protection against tampering.
3) Universality of the patch is not yet verified (games that contain the code: Crimson Skies, Wolfenstein, MechAssault, Ghost Recon Island Thunder, Unreal Championships,
xonlinedash.xbe, xboxdash.xbe
).

smo.. I've never been on xbox live and I don't plan on going on xbox live in the future.... But I like the fact that your patch could save me from accidently running xboxlive thus removing my option to go on xbox live in the future.
Your discovery is great and it will improve the lives of everyone that has a modded xbox.
Thanks alot and I hope your discovery gets implemented soon.

Just out of curiousity, though, how are you planning to implement this? I mean, as some sort of option or what?
XBtool patch would be the easiest, of course

I've written some pseudo-code and now I'm trying to figure out exactly how to patch the BIOS. I've got most of the points I need to work with identified and figured out, but as always, other work is getting priority over this. Patience
HAHA pseudo code, my sister can do that!!!
Sorry I'm drunk....

ok ok ok ok well i have been reading around and read that if you save your xbox live account on the memory card and delete it of the hdd so you have to put in the memory card to go on live. Well there i said it
This is what I would do for now.
Interesting and good work on trying to figure this out for the bios.

dvd2xbox 0.5.2
* added: Action Control List (beta). Now you're able to control the post processing for each title using the dvd2xbox.acl file and the titleID. if it doesn't work for you or you do not like it set enableACL to 0 and standard patching is used. Currently acl supports four commands: SetMediaType,HexReplace,CopyFile and RemoveDir/File (see dvd2xbox.acl for more informations and the syntax). The acl list can only grow with the help of the community. Test it, add new entries and write me if you need new commands or to fix existing ones.
from acl file:
HexReplace: HR|*.xbe|1|E8CAFDFFFF85C0EB|E8CAFDFFFF85C07D|
Searches all xbe's for E8CAFDFFFF85C0EB and replace the first occurrence by E8CAFDFFFF85C07D.
is this correct?
CODE
HR|default.xbe|1|A801750CC74|90909090C745|
while we wait for a bios patch we could use this method
