X2 BIOS Build 4978 - Built in FTP

I really don't get this. What's the big advantage of not having to burn an Evox boot CD? (unless you're a retard or lazy). While we're at it, why not put the whole dashboard in the bios? This can only lead to buggier bioses.  What's all this crap about "breaking" the 1mb barrier? Imagine the scene had started out with expensive 5mb modchips and then some guy found a way to reduce this to 256 k by using the hard drive instead. Would'nt THAT have been a great advance? Dont get me wrong,  it's understandable that modchip makers are trying new selling tricks (especially since the advent of the phoenix bios loader) and it's fine for them to advertise their "cool" new leds that you can't even see cause they're inside the damn box but when people start propaganda about how larger bioses and new leds are great advances, then the whole scene starts to stink.

Are you kidding me?  Nobody is using the enormous size as a "selling point" (can free software have selling points?).  If anything, we'd like for it to be smaller.  We're saying that the built-in FTP is a big advance, and it is.

Do you have any idea how many people have trouble burning an EvoX disc or prefer to use an MS Dashboard?  If they get their mod pre-flashed with this BIOS by their installer, they'll be all set.

Of course putting a dashboard on the mod is ridiculous.  Why not put a homebrew game of Tetris in there, too, right?  Xecuter put a basic function in there, and I think it's a good idea.

stcogolin it doesn't sound like you've helped many newbies get started,. For many burning that cd is frustrating. Some need dummy files, so they have to extract make their own xiso with dummy files. Then they have to find a cd-r or cd-rw that their xbox will read. Once newbies start flashing their chips with this bios to start, it will be easier for them, and for those they turn to for help.

X2 BIOS Build 4978 - Built in FTP
« Reply #64 on: August 22, 2003, 08:26:00 AM »

I have tried changing my subnet mask, and theonly way to do that is to use static IP for my PC rather than obtain IP address automatically. When I do this and set an IP address and give it a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 , I can't connect to the net.

Help me out please.

Thanks

Stop by on IRC in #xbins-help #xbox-scene #evolutionx, (or some of the others that i wont mention here cause of their views on piracy) , and see how many people have problems getting EVOX installed.  Or how many people later  make a mistake, name their files wrong, and have to try to evox to boot.  For a complete 'newb', especially ones without a lot of general PC knowledge, installing evox is a long and tedious process.

Are you sure you gave it an IP that was OK with your router?  If you can't get it, i would start up another thread.

1) Putting an FTPd in a bios is pointless. It's easier to ship a CD that boots Linux and an FTPd with the chips (and probably cheaper if you count the hours put into writing the BIOS FTPd).

2) It's extremely easy to write a complete FTPd (or port one of the free ones) under 256kb. I've written several on different platforms that have weighed in at ~50kb - and that can be trimmed.

My best guess as to why Team X-ecuter did this is to stay at the "top" of BIOS development, and themselves prove that "256kb isn't enough" - since Übergeek stated that a long time ago.

There's absolutely no reason to go beyond 512kb except maybe for the fact that some modchip makers are doing 512kb v1.0-v1.3-compatible chips and those are taking away sales from X-ecuter chips.

What happens when 49 of 50 people can't boot the CD??

Totally agree with heinrich, this new feature would have saved a huge amount of time for me (and im sure many others) who found it hard installing EvoX when I first had my modded XBOX.

Just because you wont benifit as much as some other people with this Bios dont regard it as a useless update because its not.

Don't forget about the TCP/IP stack.  Afaik, the kernel does not have one.

well my ip setup for live and evox is 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.x 255.255.255.0 so instead of changing the setting on my pc evox and live ill just change the info in the bios blink.gif

not that ill ever use the bios like stcogolin said what is the point?????????

You dont need to change anything but the SUBNET on your PC, this has been said over and over.  And it doesnt matter what the xbox's IP is while running EVOX, or LIVE, this ftpd is run seperatly from all of that.  Think of it more as a an X2 DASH in the bios, one that does nothing but acts as an FTP server.

i still need to change my ip for my pc nic and if i do that i will then need to change my ip for evox and live.
