X2 BIOS Build 4978 - Built in FTP

My current Win32 FTP Server test app weighs in @ 397k, which probably includes a bit of overhead, but not much. sad.gif

I'm not a programmer, so 256K was my guess.  In any case, 397K is different than 768K.  However, if the FTP code went over 256K, they couldn't release a 513K BIOS, and 768K may also not be possible.  1024K may have been the next logical size.

I would imagine that the actual bios would be closer to 768K.  But as you said, would be confusing for a lot of people, and would have problems on a 2x512k chip (you couldnt use the other 256k anyway)

QUOTE
maybe it can be made 256k? making it 1mb only would be a good way to stop matrix and other 256k mod chips wouldnt it!?!?

This I HIGHLY doubt.

192.168.10 network? Who uses that? Most routers come default at 192.168.1 or 192.168.0...

If you read what I said about 10 posts ago....

And to field the coming networking questions, here you are:

Change the SUBNET of your PC to 255.255.0.0, and the IP of 192.168.xxx.xxx, this will allow you to connect to any 192.168.xxx.xxx device. So, NO, you dont need to change your entire network to 192.168.10.xxx to use this bios. JUST the subnet. (Thanks to romracer from #xbins-chat for explaing to me how this works)

This is not fair!
How does a bios go from 256k to 1mb just by adding FTP?
Now if we want to enjoy all of the other features in the future we will have to upgrade to a X3 chip. *mamajo throws $100 on mod and instal in the garbage* oh wait I'm not that stupid.

I highly doubt that is there intention.  The X-B.I.T. has a 2MB chip, so how does this BIOS not promote their competition.  I'm sure they were noble in their intentions.

Like I already said, they'd probably have to fit the FTPd inside of 256K (evidently not likely) in order to fit the entire BIOS into 512K, and fitting this entire BIOS into 256K is just plain impossible.

You dont need to mess with the router at all.

Just change your subnet on your pc to 255.255.0.0

If FTP is that big then it would be better if they made 2 versions of the BIOS one with FTP and one without it. Once you have your system set up with Evox there is no use for FTP in the Bios.

They have that.  Its called x2 4977 is w/o FTP and x2 4978 has it.

folks you dont need to change your PC IP address. You just need to change your subnet mask to 255.255.0.0.

Since the bios has a static IP address the xecuter folks naturally wanted to use an IP address that does not conflict with the usual 192.168.1.* or 192.168.0.* addresses.

From what Team Xecuter Have said the BIOSes and Mods are made by different teams, if Xecuter really wanted to make everybody use only x2 Bioses with thier own chips, they would have done it allready. I dont think they are like that. After all, a scene that promotes open source and freedom without commerciality would not rely on such tactics

I really don't get this. What's the big advantage of not having to burn an Evox boot CD? (unless you're a retard or lazy). While we're at it, why not put the whole dashboard in the bios? This can only lead to buggier bioses.  What's all this crap about "breaking" the 1mb barrier? Imagine the scene had started out with expensive 5mb modchips and then some guy found a way to reduce this to 256 k by using the hard drive instead. Would'nt THAT have been a great advance? Dont get me wrong,  it's understandable that modchip makers are trying new selling tricks (especially since the advent of the phoenix bios loader) and it's fine for them to advertise their "cool" new leds that you can't even see cause they're inside the damn box but when people start propaganda about how larger bioses and new leds are great advances, then the whole scene starts to stink.

You dont need to change anything but the SUBNET on your PC, this has been said over and over.  And it doesnt matter what the xbox's IP is while running EVOX, or LIVE, this ftpd is run seperatly from all of that.  Think of it more as a an X2 DASH in the bios, one that does nothing but acts as an FTP server.
