Can A Laptop Be Used?
« on: July 21, 2006, 04:48:00 AM »

Can a laptop be used instead of a normal PC to connect the XBox360 DVD drive? The reason I ask is a simple one, I DONT HAVE A DESKTOP PC!!!!! :S

If a laptop can, and I doubt it can, be used, anyone have any ideas how to do it.

Why do you doubt that you could flash your drive with a laptop?  I'm fairly confident that it can b done...The drawing aboverepresents my theoretical laptop setup.  Once I receive everything that I have ordered, I plan on flashing via xecuter's connectivity kit.
Inorder to be able to use it, i need power.  I just happen to have an external drive enclosure, so i will power the connectivity kit with that power cable (the cable that is to be going to the drive that should be in the enclosure).  Then i will power my xbox 360 optical drive with the sata power cable that comes with the connectivity kit.  Alls that left now is rigging up a way to connect the sata optical drive to my laptop.
My laptop doesnt have a sata port, so I had to find a work around.  Thats why I bought a sata to usb converter on ebay.  That should allow me to connect the sata to my laptop through usb!   i know the setup is a big mess, but nevertheless it should work., what do you guys think?  i can post my successful or unsuccessful details when i get everything and try it.

Did you have any luck with this, judging from your excellent diagram it all went smoothly? biggrin.gif

Btw I understand the theory, I would like to see someone who has actually done the flashing via a laptop write up a report.

Is there anyone out there that has actually done this.

Sorry for keeping you guys waiting, but I just received my sata to usb converter today.  (The guy that I bought it from on Ebay is from Hong Kong).  Fellow members, let me be the first to officially announce that YES, flashing can be successfully done via a laptop.  I did it following my excellent diagram tongue.gif and using OPA-XTREME-HITACHI-7IN1-V2_1 .  Flashed in a manner of minutes.  (less than 2 after everything was hooked up).  I will post pictures of my setup before the end of the day.   smile.gif

The OPA-XTREME-HITACHI-7IN1-V2_1 is only for Hitachi drives, sorry for not making it clear in the tutorial

I'm not positive.  Thats the way I did it--i turned my laptop off, plugged my setup to the usb port and then booted my laptop.  I havent attempted plugging in my setup while my laptop was on, but because the connection is usb, I dont think the laptop (or pc) has to boot with usb drivers--as long as it still is able to load them.

This was the eaisest way for me to get power to the xecutor connectivity kit because I have a laptop, and therefore no molex cable.  In my situation, i cant see another way of powering the connectivity--there might be a cable with a molex plug on one end and with the standard 3 prongs on the other so that you could power it straight from an outlet, but i havent ever looked for one.  You can find the xecuter kit here but that version 1 of it.  the version 2 is made more statically sound.  As for the firmware file, I cannot tell you where on the internet it is, seeing as it will violate the terms of this site... this thread might be of some help, however
