Repair A Samsung Ms 28 Drive
« on: August 12, 2009, 05:15:00 PM »

I've got a Samsung MS 28 drive that just won't eject. I got the drive from my brother and he got it from someone else... I really have no idea about what happened to it. I know the drive is flashed.

I've uploaded a video so you can see how the drive behaves. Link to video here

Any suggestions on how to repair it are highly appreciated

first thing to check is the band..if not its the motor or board..

there is a small wheel on the front on the drive..start to turn that till the tray starts to come out..then pull the tray slowly as far as it will go..then at the back end of the tray is 2 little levers..pull them up and the tray will come out sompletely..you should then see the band around the wheel at the very front of the drive....plug the drive back in again and eject..see if the wheels turn..if they do then the band has become too slack.remove the black band. then just put any really small rubber band around it that was smaller than the original...also a good idea to lube and clean it up while its fully open in that state..clean down the sides and allong the metal runners but dont touch the laser if possible..

if the wheel doesnt turn at all then its going to be either the motor or the board..either way get a dump of the drive if you can and then you can just buy a new drive and spoof/inject the key into it..

Thank you for the detailed reply (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I going to try and clean it as good as I can and maybe try replacing some parts from another dvd drive if possible. I'll report back on how it goes.

Thanks again, now I know where to begin!

The eject problem is quite common on Samsung drives. If it is caused by the drive band then you can fix it like this:

I have saved these rubberbands from old pc dvd-drives. Some of them are short enough for Samsung.

Update..

Alright so I tried fixing the damn thing today and no luck. I desoldered the motor to see if it was fried and connected it to a battery and it worked so I'm guessing something is wrong with the board itself since it doesn't seem to send the command to the motor.  I did disconnect and reconnect all the cables to see if they were damaged in any way, but could see that anything was wrong.

Thanks anyway guys! hope this thread can help someone else.
