Current State Of Play With All Drives
« on: August 09, 2009, 05:04:00 AM »

I've had a break of about a year from the modding scene after selling my old 360. I'm contemplating purchasing another 360 soon and wanted to know what the current state of play is with the drives. I pretty much stopped after the lite-on drives came out needing soldering etc. Basically are the current boxes hackable without any soldering/drive swapping?

It would be really handy to have a sticky in this section with all the drives listed out in the market and what the status is with modding each of them and a summary of what's required. Also where the drives are turning up - location/SKU type etc.

Cheers

All drives are hackable with jungle flasher.

Just getting the dvd key (which is needed)
On the liteon 7XXX firmware needs a probe (no soldering required but you need to make or buy a probe)
On the liteon 8XXX firmware you need to run a few extra programs, Will be built in to the next release of jungle flasher so if you can wait like 2-3 days it should be included.

No way to tell firmware apart externally, But date can give you a guide. Jun 09 and newer mostly have 8XXX firmware.

All new xboxs will have liteon drives.
Half way 08 up intill now.

That summarises up things great cheers. Do you need this probe for the 8xxx drive the same as the 7xxx drives? Where would I get such a probe from as I don't parting with a bit of cash rather than DIYing one.

probe only needed on 7xxxx firmware. 8xxxx software only dumping.
I dont know where you live so cant tell you which shop but search google. something like ck3 pro.
But imo diy would be best because u only need it once to get the key the first time and why spend money on a kit t only use it once.

I second that sticky post idea ... would save us all a lot of answering newbie questions. There is already one at http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=513412, but it honestly could use a little rewrite and update to be more straighforward / newbie friendly. And this post should mention 360drives.com to find where drives are turning up.

If you can solder, its really better to just make your own spear. You could do it in 20minutes w/ <$5 in parts (if you know where to get 'em... or FREE if you already have them..).

a NPN transistor
2 resistors
some wire and/or alligator clips
some solder
soldering iron

I just made the circuit on an extra piece of perfboard I had.. I had an extra molex adapter w/ a 5V and GND connection. I use alligator clips to clip the Collector to the Pin2 on my serial port header on my motherboard. I use another alligator lead w/ a sharp pin to connect the base to R707 on the LiteOn drive.

It really is easy.

I suggest you try your best to purchase the newest possible Xbox 360 console available near you. Once you have it, open it up and see what drive you got.

If you get the 8xxx model, you're good to go with just a SATA card. If you get the 7xxx model, you'll need to invest in a probe.

the CK3 is good, but I would personally recommend the Maximus USB Xtractor, I found it extremely easy to use.

Good luck.

My motherboard has a Intel® 82801FB chipset. Does anybody know if I can mod my liteon 83850C DVD ROM with this chipset?

Thanks

Personally, My nvidia motherboard sata ports didn't work 7xxx drive. It did not detect the drives. I heard people had alot of success with the via 6421 chipset which I had to buy.

Quoted from a dosflash release:

v1.3 change log
Compatibility with:
1)....
2).... etc
3)Intel 82801FB/FW (ICH6/ICH6W)

I ended up making my own spear once i got the 5v to it everything worked out proper. believe me this was the first time i had ever soldered. seriously. I used a nforce 680sli board and never had any issues detecting the drive unless it was something i messed up
