Lite-on 16d2s Firmware Update Procedure...
« on: August 08, 2009, 09:26:00 PM »

Hi,

did a forum search but did not find a thread that offered an answer - if I oversaw anything please point me to the right thread !

So I just flashed a brand new Lite-On 16D2S successfully with iXtreme 1.6 using the Xecuter Connectivity kit - got a couple of questions:

1. how is the future update process going to be for the Lite-On ?

--> can this be done via SATA only or do I need to use the CK3 kit every time ?

--> do I need to erase the Lite-On and re-flash it every time or just write over the existing firmware ?

The reason why I'm asking is I want to use a SATA extension and update the firmware without taking the 360 apart every time.

--> If I need to erase the Lite-On every time I update, can this be done using the 360 as a power source ?
--> If so, would I just press the 360 on/off button real quick to perform the power cycle ?

2. I have 2 spare Samsungs (from older, defect 360's) laying around here.

--> besides that the update process for the Samsung can just be done via SATA without any hassle (so I would not need to take the 360 apart every time I update) are there any other advantages to the Samsung ?

--> does the Lite-On read backups as well as the Samsung, considering I use quality media and my Lite-On was manufactured in March 2009 ?

Thanx for your input in advance !

- Mike

Well first off, Lite on drives need to be erased before you can write to them.
You only need to user the serial once to get the key then when it has Ixtream you can get it over sata, (or if its the new drive over sata).

What you are doing just have a sata plug on the xbox will work but it will make it very hard.
It will be a mission to power cycle the dvd drive when your erasing it and trying to get it into status 72 for writing.

You would have to use the power cable on the back of the xbox to power cycle as using the button on the front sends drive close singnal.

A easyer way would to be put a switch on the back with the external sata port that you can just use to power cycle the dvd drive.

Just like all xbox dvd drives there can be good readers and bad readers.
So the liteon might read better or worse then a samsung depending on your luck. But you do have the bonus of a quiter drive. Iv found 50% of lite ons needed a pot tweek to read my worst quality disk that I use to test if flash worked.

To make it easyer you could replace the liteon with a benQ drive then you dont need to power cycle or erase first.
Personally thats what I would do.

Once a lite-on is flashed the ck3 kit is not needed again. You could save the key and you can read it via sata once you have ixtreme.

Yes future update will have you erase then write.

no 360 must stay on, you would be pulling the power cord out of the drive and plugging it back in if your case was open. You will need to figure out a switch.

No, only disadvantages. I am not sure if it is even safe to go on live with a spoofed lite-on.

The lite-on is considered to be the best drive for media compatibility.

iXtreme updates are very rare. I think you would be wasting alot of time doing this mod. Seriously it takes less than 5 minutes to open the 360.

BenQ drives are considered safe to be spoofed as liteon. Well according to all the research iv done.

But it would be handy for making backups also.

majinsoftware & syntaxerror329,

thank u for answering my questions ! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

As it appears I had the wrong information, I was told the Lite-On's are more error prone reading back-ups...

Never heard that spoofed drives might be a security risk going LIVE, but it's good to keep in mind...

Think I will go with the Lite-On for now...

Thanx again !
