Is Anyone Selling Any 79 Passkeys?
« on: August 08, 2009, 05:31:00 PM »

I've got a couple Hitachi 79 drives that have some manner of short on the PCB, which is preventing them from reading any discs, so a soft unlock is impossible.  My only possible option at this stage to be able to dump the drives and replace them, is using a passkey.

Most sites I've checked so far either don't have them in stock (neither the Infectus nor Maximus versions), or they want to charge 2-3x the cost of the chip for shipping.

Is there anyone out there who has one of these chips collecting dust, that wouldn't mind selling it?

If there is a "short on the pcb" then a passkey won’t help.
I have a passkey here I would gladly sell for $10USD with letter mail shipping. It has paid for itself over and over again.

Do these drives even respond to open and close?  Could you take pictures of the shorted area ?

If the drives circuit boards are messed up or bricked then you need someone to remove the TSOP's and read them externally in a Williem. It’s not that easy due to the epoxy that many of the drives have on the TSOP (I offer this service, click my banner below or PM me)

You might also be able to install a infectus2 chip but that will set you back lots of money and is very difficult to figure out for the first time.

I bet maximus got stuck with thousands of passkeys once 79unlock came out.

Maybe he could pave his driveway with them.

Passkey will do you know good at all.

If the pcb is shorted out then all you are left with is removing the tsop and reading the firmware with an external programmer.

If you already have the tsop removed let me know and I can read them for you if you don't have an external programmer.

Thank you for the responses.
I have not identified the shorted area, it is merely a best guess at this point.
The drive was function/reading normally, prior to removing the drive casing for a full case mod, and while going through the process of unlocking the drive for flashing, I discovered it would no longer read discs.

I tried the pcb in another couple drives, and got the same results.  Likewise, I tried a couple other pcb boards in this drive, and it worked fine.  So, it's not a laser issue.
Despite the read problem, the drive opens and closes just fine, the drive still boots fine in the 360, and does not give any firmware related errors or otherwise prevent the 360 from booting properly.

The only thing I can think of is using a passkey to get it into the unlocked state, and I can then dump the firmware.

If that doesn't -- or won't -- work, I would LOVE to send it your way,  Ranger, and have you just email me the firmware from it (board can obviously be trashed after that...).  Can you guys PM me with the info I need?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Not to say we also owe him huge thanks for bailing us out of the $42 new Liteon scam from Foundmy. For that alone he is a god among mere mortals.

Not a doubt Ranger. But, changing gears here. I find alot of syntax's pictures very humourous. Like the hitachi dvd roms in a brick wall. Where does this guy come up with shit like that? It's hilarious.

you are a photochop shop expert!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
