Having Troubles Getting To 0800 Mode
« on: June 26, 2009, 11:32:00 PM »

I have a spare BenQ drive, and I'm trying to use it externally to dump games. I have a Maximus Power Dongle and a SATA to USB cable that I've used to dump games with before.  I also have my BenQ flashed with the 0800 firmware.

When I turn on the power dongle and hook up my SATA to USB cable, a disc icon shows up by my cursor, which is pretty normal from my previous encounters.  After that though, it never loads up and Windows Explorer ends up freezing up on me.  The only way to get Windows Explorer to work again is to unplug the DVD drive.  This has happened on both computers I tried it on.  Does anyone know the problem?

Sata plug and play is still very dodgy and only works if some was attached when windows boots.

Pritty much its best to boot with it powered on and attached.
then use safe disconnect like usb devices before you power it off.
Then it will detect it again if you replug it with out turning off computer.

I just tried what you guys suggested, and had no luck.  My computer booted up fine, but the minute I got into Windows the CD cursor came up again.  This time the drive actually showed up in my computer, but Windows Explorer still froze up.  I had to unplug it so it would unfreeze.  Is there anything else I can do?

I finally figured it out.  Turns out Windows was confused by the half-open tray.  What I ended up doing is doing the half tray trick, then closing the tray before connecting it to my computer.  It works like a charm now.  Thanks for your help everyone.

You could always flash the "pure" 0800 firmware to your BenQ, then you wouldn't need to worry about having your tray 1/2 open every time. The pure 0800 firmware is for the sole purpose of ripping. 0800 mode is enabled just by a normal power-on of the drive, regardless of what position the tray is in.
