I replaced the laser on my system and it didn't fix the problem.  I am at odds ends to why I still get the open tray error!

1. HW Ver A0A1 - ManDate Dec 2008 - FW 74850C
2. Virgin Drive, Stock Firmware.
3. Retail
4. JungleFlasher
5. Using PC Power w/ adaptor. Adaptor has a eject switch. Similar to CK3 kit, but different maker.
6. YES, Aligator clip to pc case
7. YES, I always disconnect the laser because I'm paranoid
8. No Errors
9. YES, original games worked great

Notes: I did not have power when pushing tray 1/2 closed. I powered, opened drive, turned off power, then pushed tray 1/2 closed.

SOLVED:

- Tried Banging it (fixes similar issues for some), didn't work
- Tried moving moving laser on rails as another posted here, didn't work
- Tried adjucting the POT on the laser, WORKED (eventually).

Note, If looking directly at the two laser pots (there is a right and left POT). Adjusting the right one seems to have 0 effect. Adjusting the left one and trying a game I was able to get a game to load then show a dirty disc error. I continued turning the POT left 1/8th turns and trying to load a game again. It worked after 4-5 tries. I played with the POTS more and they seem like the type that has 360 deg movement WITHOUT ever loosening or tightening. Meaning, it is like a rivet where the POT can be set at any degrees like a hand on a clock. After playing with it I found that the flat edge of my LEFT POT worked well at ~7O-clock. I have now tested the drive with 15-20 backups and they all work. Those backups were all burned at 4-8X on differing media from TDK, memorex, verbatum, and ridata. All backes tested were known good burns that have been used in numerous other flashed xboxes.

I hope this helps others.

My guess as to what is happening? I'm not sure, but it sure seems that some form of laser calibration data is being lost. I am unaware if this data could be in the original firmware, but since the liteon hack is only getting a key and applying it to a dummy bin, I am guessing some data isn't getting applied to the iXtreme firmware. My guess as to why it happens to some drives and not others? Maybe the calibration normally matches the POT setting, but a few lucky people's drives are a bit out of sync? Just a guess... For those of you ordering new lasers, I highly recommend trying adjusting the POTs first. If adjusting the POTs fixes your issue, please post here to confirm that this is a working solution.

Note my video, so I can't take credit, but here is a snot nosed kid showing people what the POTs look like on the liteon drive/laser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnVKjlpORYw...BE&index=14

1. Not sure
2. Virgin Drive, Stock Firmware, Retail.
3. JungleFlasher
4. Using my custom made PC power supply. I simply ground/unground the pin to close/open.
5 .No, I use anti static wristband.
6. Nope, didnt disconnect
7. I didnt remove power fast enough an had to do it again but it worked
8. YES
9. Yes, read below
10. I ungrounded the pin to eject it, and grounded it to close it, half way closing I removed power from the back of the drive.

My 7XXXX LO started this after I had loaded a few games an after instant power off (unplug cable) I put in a game an all I got was "open tray" It doesnt even make a noise like its spinning the disc. I opened the box back up an opened the drive to see the laser was at the max end of the rail. I could see the laser was about 1/4" PAST the cd i left in it. So I scooted to back to the center of the disc. screwed the drive shut and the damn thing started right up. This has happened to me 2-3 times. I can tell it has happened to me cause after I insert a disc almost INSTANTLY to says 'open tray'. I eject 2-3 more times to see if it instantly show 'open tray' an listen for noises. No noises an instant 'open tray' tells me I need to move the laser in.

I did this for another guys an tested it at my house. He drove all the way home (over 50 miles) an called me the next morning saying his xbox wasnt working. If my incident hadnt happened to me it never would have struck me to tell him to move the laser back to the center. It can be a concidence it happened to BOTH ours an that cured BOTH. But an odd one for sure.

This cured both of our problems. an his was also a 7xxxx
