Just putting my 2 cents here, it seems the problem is with not disconnecting the laser. Since lasers are so sensative I disconnect it before soldering. It's not jus the soldering but also the face that pin 101 is cut and grounded. Since lasers are so sensative i'd just disconnect.

After reading this thread im starting to feel like my drive has gone bad!

Basicly I used my CK3 to extract the key on my drive 6 times. After that i erased with jungle flasher, then tried to flash but it got stuck at writing bank 0. I then used dos flash and it flashed perfectly. No games, movies, or cd's work. When i stick a disc in the drive it starts to spin real fast trying to read the disc. The laser is moving bank and forth from what i can hear but it doesnt load and after 1-2 mins i get the open trey error.

On a site note, My CK3 failed on me. After trying to flash with jungle flasher I turned off my pc and turned off the ck3 and it never worked after that. The CK3 would power fine but not eject the disc trey or recognize the drive. I had to use the xbox to flash the drive and the xbox ejected the tray just fine.

I tested his drive with my firmware on my xbox and still got open tray error. I know my key and firmware works just fine. This xbox/drive was brand new only played COD6 for a few days then tried to flash. It was never flashed before either.

Something is happening durring the flashing of these drives. What if the cause is jungleflasher? Has anyone had this happen to them that only used Dos Flash?

For the people who get the open trey error. Does your xbox spin the disc real fast like its going 52x read speed or sound normal and not be able to read it?

I build laser pointers as a hobby, using commerical DVD/bluray burner drives.  I physically go inside and remove the diodes.  Yes, its cheaper to go to BestBuy and buy a whole retail drive than to buy the diodes seperately.

I have yet to damage any red, violet, IR diodes from ESD.  The humidity in my house is below 30% and many times i grab anything metal, I get zapped.  Yet, I have never yet blown a laser diode or any other device for that fact.  I call bullshit on all the ESD claims.  If ESD does kill a diode, it's dead and will never lase again - EVER.

Laser diodes have a limited "burn" lifespan.  How often has a normal DVD movie player start to refuse to play certain movies after a few years?  Lasers loose light output over time.  This is normal for laser diodes.

To read a DVD (360, movie, etc), you need around 5mW of red laser.  Manufactures use anything from a 5mW to 35mW laser for most DVD reading drives.  Shine a 35mW laser at a disc, and it will not read due to being too powerful.  However anything from 5-20mW should reliabably read DVD's /games.  The laser should be at around 5mW, but if the calibration data is wrong the laser could be running at 20mW+.  If this was the case, the laser could overheat after a while resulting in perment damage to the diode.  The lasers (red and IR) in the 360 do not have much heatsinking and can overheat if not set to the proper output.

Were there any laser problems before the liteOn drives?  I don't remember seeing people complaining about this problem with benQ, Hitachi, Samsung drives.  Just liteons.  There are only a handfull of laser diode manufactures in the world, so its VERY possable the same manufacture of the diode in a Samsung/BenQ/Hitachi is the same diode in current liteons.  Also are people that have not flashed their liteon drives complaining about laser problems?

Remember when we rip the original F/W from a benQ/Sammy/Hitachi, we are ripping the entire firmware.  With liteon drives, most people are not ripping the entire f/w.  Is this laser calibration data not being read with a partial rip of the liteon?  Is JF properly putting this laser calibration data back properly to modified f/w?  There are 2 laser calibration data sectors in the 360 DVD drive - one for the IR laser and one for the red laser.  Is one of these calibration data sectors being ignored when reading original f/w?  Is one of these calibration data not being injected into the modded f/w using JF?

We have people who flash 30+ liteon drives with no apparent problems, while others who mod 3 liteons have issues with all 3.  Bottom line, something is not right.  For this reason, I have elected to NOT modify my July 09 360 till this problem is solved.

So I bought my new Xbox 360 2 weeks ago I successfully flashed my LiteOn 9xxxx drive with LT 1.1 today, but I am getting the dreaded Open Tray Error.

I tried flashing to the original firmware and testing to see if the error occurred and it's still there.  No matter what I try, original, backups and DVD movies, nothing works.

I have been trying to move the laser bit by bit hoping that this thing just can't calibrate it's self to the correct starting point.  I did a one point, get the drive to say "Play CD" and I thought bingo, but it just didn't load the game.  Dash faded and no game come up.

I have ordered a new laser hoping this will fix it, though I don't think it will see as when I open the drive up and open the tray and close it, I can still see the laser works, shooting out a red beam.

try new laser, if that fails get a new drive, your board looks fine.  doesn't look like its the mods fault, just typical drive failure.

        Lite On 93450C, A0A2, September 09

   2. a.) Were you upgrading from a previous version of iXtreme? If so, what version?
b.) If you were flashing a brand new/virgin drive, was it from Retail or Repair/Refurbished?
          brand new virgin drive

   3. ) What program were you using to flash?
      Jungle Flasher x64

   4. ) What were you using to power the Xbox 360 drive? (CK3, Xbox 360, or something else?)
         360

   5. ) Did you ground your drive (alligator clip to PC chassis, rest metal on metal, etc) during the process?  If so, which?
        did not ground

   6. ) Did you disconnect your laser prior to flashing?
         yes

   7. ) Were there any notable problems or errors during the dump/fw creation/flash process?
         none

   8. ) Before the flash, did you test the drive with original games?
        yes

   9. ) Were you able to solve your open tray/bad laser problem by any method? If so, please state.
ordered new laser will update if it fixes it.

Just as a sanity check:

    * ) After the flash, did you test with a DVD movie (regular, not burned)? yes Did it work? no
    * ) After the flash, did you test with an Original game? yes Did it work? no
    * ) After the flash, did you test with a Backup game? yes Did it work? no

hmm, that is odd to have a failed 9xxx.  take a picture of the wires soldered to the pcb as well as the ribbon cables.

Here is the picture of my ribbon cable.  Absolutely nothing wrong with it!

Sorry for my ignorance, but which 6 wires? The ones connected to the drive and the PCB? Red Yellow White Black ones?

The connections on those seem fine. Just received my Benq drive, just reading on how to flash them will report back in about an hour.

Those solder joints look awful, are they even making proper contact?
