Bricked Liteon Drive, Key.
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:34:00 AM »

Hi. I recently bought a faulty nice projection TV and I got a faulty XBOX with it.
TV is working fine now so I've started checking the xbox.
Its working ok, just the drive is bricked. I've opened it and there is a burnt r204 and r207.
I've replaced the r204 but the r207 had only one pad, the other one is burnt and there is small hole through pcb. From the photos of the pcb I have found on google it seems that the trace from the top board goes to only one trace from the bottom, the one next to the pcb number. I've connected those two traces and dvd started to show signs of life. Its still not opening or closing but the laser lights up. Laser does not move at all.
Tray sensors seems to work ok, because after clicking the eject button I can see 'opening' on the screen and the after a while 'closing'.
I dont think I will be able to do anything else with it but I wanted to know if it will be possible to exctract the dvd key from it.
As far as i know its stored in the MT chip which seems to be ok.
If its not possible to get it from this drive I was thinking of desoldering the whole chip from the pcb board and soldering it back to another drive and then tryting to extract it from there or maybe the new drive will work with the old chip?

Is that possible? Anyone tried it?

katar83 if you can manage to pull the switch off you may be in business for yourself really as if you can resolder the chip back to a working Lite-On. What type of soldering iron are you using to pull this off? It should work as long as you do an OUTSTANDING SOLDERING JOB. Please post back and let us know how it went.

Thats great news (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Thanks.
Im going to order a new drive today, will take few days before it will arrive.
Desoldering the chip itself should be an easy job, the only problem might be the glue arround the chip but hopefully its not THAT much heat resistant (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Im not going to use soldering iron, it would be impossible to do it. Instead a simple Hot Air soldering station with temperature controller plus some good cookson flux will do the job.
Im repairing  laptops for living so Im soldering plenty of similar chips daily.
Hopefully the chip is not totally dead.

Good news for you, the epoxy on LiteOns comes off very easy with very little heat.

Is it not worth trying to dump the key before removing the chip?
