Anyone care to explain in "for dummy" language?
Here's a quick rundown. Each game has a video partition on it (containing the video telling you to put the game in an xbox 360). So far, there are 3 different sizes (or "waves") of video partitions. Before ix1.51, there were only 2 "waves", but when the 3rd wave came along, a new fw was needed to tell the xbox it was ok to boot that disc (because previous ixtreme firmwares would see the video partition as "unknown" and figure it could be a bad backup that could get someone banned).
Generally, these partitions are referred to as "waves" because after a certain point, all subsequent games will have the same video partition (ie: first wave 3 game comes out, then until wave 4 appears, all games should have wave 3 video partitions, instead of wave 1 or 2).
There are also exceptions to the "rule", such as [forum rules suggest I probably shouldn't name the game], which should have a wave 3 video partition according to the calender, but has a wave 2 video partition, instead (not that the date is the only thing, but no need to get deeper than we already are

).
Since all known "exceptions" and "waves" are known to ix firmware (in order to better check your backups), anything that's not known will appear (to the firmware) as "possible corruption/bad data". The boot disc will tell the firmware that the backup you are about to play has all necessary data, and that it's safe for the console to boot the disc.
